RE: i lost a buck this past weekend
c903, I understand completely what you are saying, and I am not trying to push you. But unexpected things do happen. I remember reading a post this year on how the weather report was way off, I even remember last year personally hunting on a forecasted clear day and an unexpected downpour (of course I can down), happened. Lets just give a scenerio. Lets say, that someone gets a deflection (or the deer moves, whatever) at 15 yards, no rain in the forecast, and gets a stomach shot on a deer at 7 am. The person plans on waiting 8 hours before tracking, however, out of nowhere, it starts pouring 30 minutes after the shot, and the blood trail is in terrain that will wash the blood trail out. Now what?

RE: i lost a buck this past weekend
deer hunter, good effort. Not all of us have made the grade of perfect. If your not perfect and are honest about it the hunter police on this board try to rape you.
Learning to wait before trailing a wounded deer is probably one of the hardest lessons to learn about bowhunting especially when you got a big ol 8 point laying out there waiting to be grabbed by some coyote or unethical hunter. My philosphy on trailing deer is this, if I think I made a good double lung shot, I give the deer 30 minutes to an hour. I then trail for a very short distance and if I ain' t found him within 100 yards maybe less, I assume my shot wasn' t so good and I' m backing out and going to get something to eat or whatever else kills 3 or 4 hours of time. then I go back and don' t give up. If I make a bad shot, I locate the blood trail, mark it, and get the heck out for 4 hours. A forecast of rain changes everything and I absolutely will not take a shot unless it' s a certain double lung killer. good luck to you and I think you handled the police well. |
RE: i lost a buck this past weekend
From what you say, it doesn' t sound like a bad shot at all, maybe low or high, but if you indeed hit where you say, the deer is close by and was dead within a short time. If you run an arrow through that zone you have to have hit at LEAST one lung. A one lunged deer is not going to be blowing... that was a different deer. You had to hit intestines too, so it' s to be expected you aren' t going to have a lot of blood on the ground without and exit hole. Dead deer some where close by. You just missed it and the sign that leads to it.

You are not pushing me, you are pushing out information. And your are correct. " Mr. Murphy" is like God; he is omnipresent. You know that I am not one to stir the stuff and I am not often blunt ;); but I was mainly referring to an unreasonable and " high hat" dis' being put upon " deer hunter 21" by someone whom has more self-adulation than experience related to the subject at hand. ;) |
RE: i lost a buck this past weekend
I agree with davidmil, a lung hit deer will not blow. He' s laying somewhere nearby. Hope you eventually find it.

[quote]atlas:
A " detail kind of guy" should know that rain is in the forecast, how much rain is in forecast, and how imminent the rain is for reasons of deciding if taking a shot is appropriate at a particular time, and whether to stay in the field to be ready to immediately get on the track if the rain begins to fall and it is heavy enough to dissipate the blood. [quote] I did know........no heavy rain was called for and at most barely a drizzle had occurred before the shot. I had a perfect shot opportunity and I took it.......put the arrow right through the heart and lungs but still went and had lunch because no passthrough. The rain started again and was not pouring but enough to make me want to get on that trail ASAP.......which I did.......with my brother and 2 buddies. The track was tougher because of the non passthrough then it was because of the rain. We stuck to our tracking routine and were lead right to him. My shot was not only appropriate but perfectly executed and followed by a smart, patient tracking job by 4 guys. If there is something wrong with that then you will have to let me know. I am not being argumentative. Just pointing out that just when you believe you have your act together, you find that you always have room to learn. |
RE: i lost a buck this past weekend
It seems that you are the type of guy that no matter what anyone says...You have an answer for. Then I come to find out that you have one bow kill to your name to back up your high brow attitude. Now that cracks me up! I' m sure you are a expert tracker after one kill. Give me a break. That is a skill that takes years to develop. Not one bow kill. Does my story of my bow kill sound like someone who doesn' t know what they were doing or just got lucky?? I know guys that have 20+ bow kills and they are morons who have also lost many deer from bad shots or lack of tracking skills............are their opinions more valuable then mine because they have killed 20 deer with a bow?? I don' t see the connection.........maybe if I was a newbie to hunting all together you might have a point. If you want to believe I don' t know what I am talking about because I only have 1 bow kill that' s fine with me............this forum is full of " experienced" guys you can learn from. Many can be found starting threads just like this when their luck runs out and the deer they just shot doesn' t fall right in front of them. |
RE: i lost a buck this past weekend
I never said I was done learning..........I do feel as though I have an excellent knowledge and experience base to work from. Nothing is for sure though....I know what you are trying to say and I agree. |
