i lost a buck this past weekend

saturday evening i shot a nice 8pt that was quartering away but i guess i should' ve placed the shot a little farther back because it hit the deer in what i thought was a good spot i went in one side and stuck in the other shoulder and the deer ran across the field and stopped and i thought it was going down cause it was wobbling but it just walked slowly in the woods and we waited for about 30 min to an hour and then went in to blood trail it and we trailed it for about 150 yards and then the blood quit and while we was tracking the deer we heard a deer blow in the woods and it mite have been him but i' m not sure so that was the last blood drop up next to a tree top where they had logged and we could not find anything else of the deer and i know he died because my arrow was still in him and we never found the arrow so what do you guys think how could this deer have made it that far i want to hear you guys oppinion.

we waited for about 30 min to an hour and then went in to blood trail it and we trailed it for about 150 yards and then the blood quit
And that was it? Did you give up after loosing the first sign of blood? Did you try circling (increasing the circle by 5 yards each time) the last sign of blood? Did you mark the trail of blood and try to walk a straight line after loosing it? Did you try grid searching? Anything?

1. You should have waited longer
2. I hope you looked more and just aren' t telling us that you did.
3. If you didn' t look more.....[:@][:@]

You probably caught 1 lung and the liver with that shot. By going to look for the deer so soon, you pushed him into the next county before he died....and he is dead. They can live a long time with that type of shot, but usually unless pushed shouldn' t be too far.

when you look all night and then all morning the next morning and still no luck what else can you do its been 2 days ago now and the whole purpose of the post was too help find out about my shot placement so i could not make the same mistake and don' t think for one sec if i didn' t feel like i had looked long enough for the deer or gave my very best effort to find him i would have my butt out there looking for more sign or the deer this is my first deer i have ever lost but i did learn somthing from this experience about the next shot i take.

Hate it for you .......but IME (having lost a few and found many) this is what my guess would be........

You didn' t hit where you think you did ! A qtr away animal hit behind the shoulder and hitting the opposite shoulder is an almost garanteed quick kill.....that I doubt the deer would make it much over 100 yrds.
I wasn' t there but......could you have hit the shoulder on the entry and didn' t get the penetration to the other shoulder that you think you did ?
Maybe you hit behind the shoulder and out through the neck causing a single lung hit ???
I have learned from the few I have lost that if one goes over 100-125 yrds max......to back off and wait......cause more than likely it wasn' t an immediately fatal hit.
If you did hit it good and you ran out of blood at 150 yrds .....I think the deer would have been in short distance of where your last sign was......although they seem to disappear.....he would' ve been there somewhere !! Good Luck the rest of the season !!

Outside of bad, lazy, or faulty tracking ability, many deer are lost because of two main reasons of several reasons. One, because the shooter has not thoroughly learned the territory in which he or she is hunting, and therefore has no idea of where the deer may be headed; two, because some shooters are always looking for the wounded/dead deer to be lying in plain sight.

1. Tracking a wounded deer begins long before the shot is made.
2, A wounded deer normally does not leave for parts unknown.
3. A wounded deer will hide if it can, and often dies in the hiding place.

A wounded deer eventually knows it is in trouble and will hide. It is my belief that the deer is not knowingly hiding from you. It knows that it is now vulnerable and will be hiding from predators and seeking cover from bad weather in deep and/or protective cover.

If you believe the hit -although not mortal, was good enough to cripple the deer for awhile, look in all dense/protective cover in your area. However, that is why you need to thoroughly know your area...." Tracking a wounded deer begins long before the shot is made."

Shots gone wrong can be forgiven; it happens to the best.....even those that yell the loudest. Bad or lazy tracking techniques are unforgivable. You do not shoot a deer, or any animal, if your post-hit tracking ability is lacking.
