Fri. morning I hunted a corner of our property I had never hunted before. At daybreak, just when you could see in the fields, I saw deer running in the creek bottom at the other side of the field. I noticed they would follow the woodline along the creek, then angle across the field into the thick cover at the other end of the property. In all that morning I counted 11 deer, all doe.
Fri afternoon, I moved down the property line to cut-off the point where they were coming into the thick cover. I saw 5 more doe, but I needed to close about 40-50 more yards to where they were entering and exiting the thick cover. All doe, no bucks.
Sat morning, about 8:15am, I heard a snort/wheeze from the thick stuff. About 5 minutes later, here come the same doe along the creek bottom that I had seen Fri. Three doe were now within 40 yards of me, and I am on the ground, not in a stand. The biggest doe began to snort looking back in the creek bottom. She turned broadside at about 25 yards, when I let it go. I thought the arrow was still in her when she bolted, but it turned out to be blood. She went about 100 yards and I saw her go down in the creek bottom. When I started across the field, out came the 2 doe from the creek with a 6 or 8 pt. basket buck.
One question. I don' t think she winded me, even though I was on the ground. But could she have been snorting at the buck?
Oh well, I' ve got meat in the freezer. Sorry to be long-winded, but this was also my 3rd deer with a bow ever, and my first with my new Mathews. Hoo-wa!!
