RE: Crimson Talons ILLEGAL in PA!

I emailed that PA Game commission press release to Scott Mackie who is the president of 2XJ Enterprises which is the company that sells the Crimson Talon broadheads. He returned my email last night to my surprise. He mentioned that they met with the PA Game Commission on Monday and they are working to get the issue resolved. Overall he seemed very optimistic on the outcome.

Sucks for me, I bought them and found out today, realistically, who looks up a particualar broadhead to see if they are legal before they buy them. I knew they exceded diameter and #of blade requirements and that was enough for me. Now I gotta go buy new broadheads and the season starts tomorrow. Oh fun for me.

The point is that you did not need to know about the specific broadhead.

You know what the legal cutting diameter is, without looking up a specific broadhead.

I don' t think it is reasonable to expect the GC to make a ruling on every model/make of broadhead out there.

Brand x might have only .5 of an inch cutting diameter, so the PGC would have to have a release stating that this is illegal?

It is our responsibility to read the regs and to ensure that we are using legal equipment.

The cutting diameter is not the problem with this broadhead. The design of the blades is the problem. Make them straight and they have a marketable broadhead.

T_inPA2, I think you hit the nail on the head. The blade design on the crimson talon is heilical, not straight like most BH' s and the last 1/8" on thr rear of the blades is in the air not set in the ferrel. So with heilical blades and the gap at the rear my guess is that it would act like a barb on a fishing hook. So if a deer was shot with a non-leathal shot the BH would have a more difficult time coming out of the animal. When i read this post a freind of mine in NH uses these and showed them to me and that was the only thing we could think of . The other head that comes to mind was the old hoyt chuck-it BH, they were illegal in a few states for acting like a barb. Hopefull PFG will state their reason for being illegal then there wont be any speculation on why?

Crimson Talons are not legal in Ontario as well The regs say that the blades must be STRAIGHT and UNSERATED

The hook on the end doesn' t matter. It is because the cutting edge is not straight. Curved blades.
