Has anybody have theory, eperience about any co-relation between grazing cattle and deer movement in proximity to pastures?
I was sitting on my stand last evening and cattle on the pasture next door started moving in my direction, didn' t see any deer so had plenty of time to contemplate

When I was a kid, someone told me cows will run the deer off. For some reason that has stuck with me, BUT. We were scouting just yesterday and my landowner has a few cows feeding in the picked cornfield I will be hunting near. It has been very dry ( least rain in history this August ), but had rained a few days ago. That made all the tracks very fresh. Man, the deer tracks were everywhere!
The last few years, there has been so many deer using this field, maybe they gang up on the cows and chase them away. Jim

It' s been my experience here in Sw Iowa that when cows move into a pasture or grain field, the deer move out. I' ve seen crop fields harvested and the deer move in right away and start gleaning the leftovers. Then the landowners would move their cattle on there to do the same thing. Once the cattle moved in the deer would go feed elsewhere. Now elsewhere might only be on the other side of the fence but thet don' t seem to ever be in the same field as cattle. Just my observations.

The experience on the property I hunt is that cows and deer definately don' t hang out together, but they co-exist just fine. I' ve had the cows move in near my stand, and hang out for a while...no deer that hunt [:-]

Generally, I' ve never seen deer within sight of cattle, but I know they sometimes feed the same pastures. I' ve observed this in South Texas where you may have cows for 30 minutes or so that feed through your stand area and then see deer in the same area 30 minutes or so later.
I had a weird experience about 5 years ago while rifle hunting over a powerline right-of-way. It was during a steady rain and a bunch of cows exited the woods right under me and made their way south throught the right of way. A nice 6 point buck moved right through the group of cows going north and stopped right under my stand. I shot him at no more than 20 yards (the cows had cleared the right-of-way by then and were no longer in the way).
Sometimes the deer are just " where you see them" and you can' t explain it. I always say " expect the unexpected" .
