Broadhead opinions wanted: Gator XP' s vs. WASP JAkhammer SST vs. Spitfires
#1
I' m wanting to try some new broadheads this year. I have shot the NAP Spitfires for years, but am wanting to try something new. Can any of you offer your opinions on the above listed (or others) heads?
Thanks,
Mike

A lot depends on your bow setup. I can' t in good faith recomend a head without know your Kinetic enrergy level, or at the minimum your draw weight and draw length, along with the type of bow you shoot and your arrows. All of those heads are good to excellent along the the entire Vortex/Mar-den Line that bow spoke of. If you have the Ke levels needed I personaly prefer either the Gators or the Vortex min-max pro series with the 2" cut.

5 shot,
According to my calculations, my bow has 70# of kinetic energy.
432 grains @ 270 fps. This is what I got off of this site - http://www.stararchery.net/kinetic_energy.htm
Does this help?

With 70# of KE I would think that just about any well-made mechanical head would work well for you. I like the Gators' design though as well and would probably choose them out of the three you listed. I believe the design lends itself to better penetration.

I used 75gr Wasp JakHammers for years. They killed everything that I shot but my buds have had some trouble with them. I have went back to fixed blade Montec G5s and Muzzy 100s due to my elk hunting this fall. But at close range (30yrds or less) with your 70lbs of KE you should have no problems with any quality BH.

I shoot spitfires and love them. Never had a problem. Complete pass thrus on the deer I have shot. I bought some replacement blades yesterday, and today I am going to buy some practice blades to use instead of field points

Mike Im shooting a 400gr arrow and getting KE in the low to mid 70s
I chose the Gator XP for the upcoming season based on 5shots review and my own observations. I am also in 100% agreement with PABowhntr, I believe the design of this mechanical so improves penetration that is will out penatrate heads of a smaller diameter especially when hard obstacles are encountered. Also I recently saw some research on arrow penetration and saw 0% of 3 bladed heads would penatrate the scapula. The 2 bladed design, unique blade deployment and the giant whole these heads leave all lead me to believe this is one awsome head. If you do a search there are some entry and exit wound pics someone posted. I' ll post some pics after the season opens.

GRRRRRRRRR. Norton internet security. I' m having to re type this.
The only concern I have with the two blade design is the fact that it cuts a slit rather than a huge hole like I' m used to seeing with most 3 blade mechanicals. Perhaps the cutting edge on the tip of the XP' s will help enlarge the hole though. I do tend to agree that a 2 blade design will probably penetrate better than a 3 blade, I' m just nervous about the slit vs. the hole thing.
Our local Bass Pro Shops is making the Gators much more appealing though. They are on sale for $19.99 per 3 pack and there is a 20% off coupon on any one item in the store in the Texas hunting & fishing regulations book. That would be $15.99 per pack of three.
