Rifles....are they cheating
I love to hunt I bowhunt and shotgun hunt. I know what a challenge it is to get with in 30 yards or less for a bow shot but is it fair to take game 300+ yards away with a high powered rifle?

I sincerely hope that this thread does not get out of hand.
To answer your question....No, I don't think it is "cheating". I sure as heck can't hit anything at 300 or 400 yards with a high powered rifle but I can darn well hit a quarter at 20...

100 yds? 300 yds? Hold a little high & kill it! W/ a flat shooting rifle, deer are pretty much a done deal. I used to shoot a 6mm mag @ woodchucks. If I could see 'em I could hit 'em. A kid on tv shot 250 yds & missed low on a mule deer. The deer had no idea what happened or where it came from. He ran 30 yds & stopped, the kid killed him w/ a 2nd shot. I've never hunted deer w/ a rifle, but from what I've seen in the woods, it shouldn't be too hard. I look forward to next bow season for my chance @ a nice buck.
Phil.
I guess I never answered the question. I don't think rifles are cheating. They serve a purpose for the people that use them. I've seen disabled people shoot rifles & shotguns that couldn't shoot a bow. There is absolutely nothing wrong w/ people's choices, be they bow or rifle, as long as they are legal & etical.

Getting a good kill shot on a deer at 300 yards isn't a slam dunk for most people, by any means. Most folks are good to a hundred yards, tops. Quite frankly, bowhunters can't keep the herd numbers in check. If not for gun hunters, we'd be neck deep in sick and starving deer. At least until they all died off.

RE: Rifles....are they cheating
All my shots with a rifle in my area are well within 150yds or less.
I would not say it was cheating to shoot a deer at 300yds.If it is a clean kill
and legal, I see nothing wrong with it.

WOOOOAAAAAHHHH NELLLLLIEEEEEE!!! I have probably as strong as an opinion on this subject as one can possibly have. I'll hold tight for a bit however. Right now I'll just say that I've never gun hunted deer and I never will. Anxious to see other's posts.

RE: Rifles....are they cheating
No they aren't cheating, they are just a different type of hunting. Using a rifle makes you no less of a hunter than the guy who uses a bow. I will admit a bow is more challenging in some ways, I'm a prime example. I've killed many deer with a rifle, but I took up bow hunting (exclusivly) 3yrs ago and haven't killed one with my bow yet! I will admit most of the reason is me passing them up but a bow does present many more challenges, the biggest being the distance factor.
To say a rifle isn't hunting would be very childish. It's all hunting just different ways of doing it.

RE: Rifles....are they cheating
I have a few thoughts on this......
1. Yes, rifle hunting is cheating and all rifle hunters must be jailed immediately as they have nowhere near the ethics or morals that even the lowliest bow hunter has. JK
2. No, rifle hunters are not cheaters, they are in fact the only true hunters since bow hunters have such a high rate of wounding. JK again
3. Both rifle and bow hunters share the woods. Each can be a wonderful hunter or a scum parasite. It is up to each hunter to be decide which he wishes to be. Not kidding.
I hunt with both (weapons/methods) and strive to be ethical and judicious with my shot selection, as should all hunters.
