What tells you to start trailing immediately, or to pack it in and pick up the trail in the morning?

Thundermug, I carry a field tip arrow with me in the stand, for grouse and such, at the end of a morning hunt I usually shoot the arrow into the ground, at a leaf or whatever, I have never noticed a difference (shot high or low). Now, call me stupid (which some will
), I know the theory that the arrow should go high, but it doesnt. Maybe because the target is flat on the ground instead of horizontal to it? I dont know, but I have shot many times and noticed little if no difference in impact area. Whats up, just wundering, maybe this has caused me some of those problems in the PAST.

Don,the reason you don' t go high is because you are apparently using good form and bending at the waist.
I think Thundermug has his numbers posted slightly off.If a deer is 25 yards from the base of your tree(horizontal range),then shoot it for 25 yards. If the deer is 25 yards from where you are in the tree, across the hypotenuse(slant range) of an angle, then shoot it for 20-22 yards.Sight paralax will make a slight difference but not enough to worry with in a hunting situation.
And it is the pythagorean theorum.
I think all the others have covered your question quite well. When in doubt,BACK OUT.

... Wisconsin deer are a larger breed than in Fl. I think smaller deer succumb to blood loss quicker than their larger northern relatives, maybe that is why your success and my success differ.
if the shot is good , it doesnt matter how big the animal is , it will go down just a quick as a Fla. deer.
Elk go down within sight with a good hit.they are bigger than any deer.(I know Elk are in the deer family).

Don,
Glad you cleared that up. Learning from mistakes is all we can do to help avoid them in the future. I' m not going to jump on anyone for making a mistake, only those who choose not to learn from them. No hard feelings.

Selway, yea that means it is illegal.
The same is true here in Ky but most don' t even know it is illegal and carry them anyway.
It really is a good law.Could you imagine putting the wrong arrow on the bow early in the morning in the dark while you are still half asleep. It would take an absolute perfect hit to ensure that you find the animal. You most likely would have no blood trail so it better be a perfect double lunger and hope you see it go down.

It' s not illegal to carry an arrow with a field tip on it while bowhunting in Wisconsin. That reg refers to broadheads only! A field tip is not a broadhead!
