I' m looking for suggestions on how best to keep your kill when your on a 5 day hunt in the back country and you get the big one on the first day. All I have available are coolers and ice. My butcher says storing meat in a plastic bag for a long period is not a good idea. Any seggestions?

Well I have never been in that spot, but if you hung it in the coolest spot you can find, and wrap it in some insulating material and kept the body cavity full of ice that might work. I was hoping some one from the warmer climes on the board may have some experience with this and tell you what to do. Another suggestion would be to see if the gracery store in town may let you hang it in their meeat locker for a fee.

The dry ice is good, real good as long as it has something between it and the meat. It is pricey, but it will last a long time if you don' t open the cooler. Also, de-bone the meat, bones hold heat longer and take up space in the cooler.

I quarter mine and throw it on ice here in SC. After a couple days, I' ll cut it up and wrap it. I' d rather have a fride/cooler though. That way the fat and silver stuff hardens and is easily trimmed off before freezing. But hey, you gotta do what you have to work with.
