In reply to Rack Attack ,
I don' t currently own a traditional bow like yours , which is why I don' t currently hunt with one . I do own a 150 lb crossbow , which I bought to aquaint myself with some of the basics of archery in general , as a possible prelude to trying your way . At the time of purchase it was not legal for hunting except for disabled hunters . I never(reread my posts) claimed that a crossbow was " SOOO much like a compound" , and not everyone likes or wants a traditional bow . If you honestly believe that shooting a crossbow is " sooo easy , and requires no skill" then I invite you to try one for yourself before generalizing like you did . While I normally place some value on your opinion , it is obvious that you have no experience with one . If you did you would know that leaving a crossbow at full cock continuously can damage the prod(bow) , which means that I have to draw too if I don' t want to have to replace mine each year . You would also have known that it has a shorter range , greater drop , and less KE than a stickbow . And you probably also would have known that in my state you can only use one on does , and only during Late Archery . As for the " non archers" concern , there are plenty of " non gunners" out there during the Firearms seasons , but we still have to share the wood with them . I' ll bet you know plenty of bowhunters who only drag their bow out 1 week before the season starts , practice for a day , and then put them away after the season ends . I know lots of gunners and bowhunters like that , and I don' t like them either .
bullsi ,
hunting regs confuse me too sometimes , but the powers that be enact them to control the herd not just the hunters . It bugs me , as I just pointed out to Rack , that some folks just don' t want anything but a free ride . A crossbow is not a free ride or more people would own one , and probably demand to hunt all archery seasons as well . Since my state considers them archery equipment(Easy there Rack)I would be in favor of that if they could demonstrate proficiency with it . But I would expect the same for all the other hunters , and their weapon of choice , including myself .
