Default 65 vs 80%

I am getting ready to buy a new bow & have noticed there are a lot of 80% let off bows out there. It does seem awfully nice to be able to hold the lesser amount. I had heard P&Y made some sort of reconsideration on what let off they would let into the book. Does anyone know the particulars on that. Are there drawbacks to shooting the 80% bows?

Slightly lower speeds with 80%. Up to 3 or 4fps. Other than that, can't think of drawbacks. I could care less with P&Y spec on it.

You would still be put in the books but with a * by it to indicate you had 80% letoff.

What P&Y should have is two ** by it to indicate compound kill with 80%, with only one * by 60% letoff, and none for a bow kill with trad archery equipment. I think if Pope and Young were still alive and kicking, they would approve of this change.

Mark,

The P&Y Club has a newer book out there with just P&Y animals taken by traditional bows. I have one, It's pretty neat.

It only makes sense. Is the scoring still the same?

Trad-Bow Elitists....

I wish I had shoulders that would tolerate me trying to become proficient and hunting w/ a Trad-bow, but I unfortunately don't. As it is, I'm dropping down to 60-65# w/ my 75-80% let-off stuff. But at the same time, I still enjoy watching the arrows fly. And I can HONESTLY appreciate that it takes quite a bit more skill and dedication to be proficient w/ a Trad-bow.

As for which bow to buy, I certainly wouldn't let a potential " * " in a P&Y book talk me out of a bow that I really liked. Best advice a guy could get is...."SHOOT EVERYTHING, then make a choice!!!"

Ive got 3 eligible for P&Y but record books arent really my cup of tea. I do use an 80% letoff bow too. Makes it really nice for those bluecold days when pulling and holding the bow back is a chore. The little bit of speed lost is inconsequential to me when compared to the benefits.

You won't believe it but it hurts my shoulders to shoot compound these days. Holding all that wieght at 12" of draw compared to me holding all the wieght at full draw. Its just different and hurts me. With a tradbow, your back is doing all the work at full draw. But with a compound, you forearm is doing alot of it during the draw. I say give it a try.

Big difference however is the bow shoulder hurts more with trad bows. Quite the opp with compounds.

No kidding? 3. Thats pretty good. Must be nice hunting those bow only counties? I miss living down there. But when I lived down there in the 80's it wasn't quite that good hunting. Congrads on the three.

BC I used to go everywhere in the state to hunt..lol. Now I cant make myself leave the house. My favorite tree is about 100 yards from my front porch. Its unreal how good the hunting is here now compared to just 15 years ago. You honestly never know what you will see. I almost stayed home from gun hunting last year because the rut was just getting good here. With the luck I had up there I should have stayed home! Ive only got 7 acres here.. but it is backed by the RD Bailey WMA. This area actually gets hunted pretty hard and still produces.

I think of the 4 bowhunting counties that Logan and Mingo may actually be the best 2. We have a pretty good little secret going on down here...lol.

No doubt, when we were kids, during the dark years, we drove to all the way to freakin Upsher county and Parkersburg to hunt. I am thinking about buying out of state, and taking 2 weeks a year and hunting down there. Just stay at my moms. I think the problem is land availability now.
