Here is the way I see it regarding mechs vs. fixed.

If you are of sufficient weight, you can bodily smash through the side of the house and open the door once in; or you can open the door and easily walk in.

I think that is a relatively well suited analogy.

cottonfarmer,

Considering your KE numbers are on the low side I would suggest that you do not go with an expandable head and stick with either a replacement blade head like the Muzzy or Wasp...or go with a cut on contact tip like the Magnus or old Fred Bear Razorheads...depending on point weight ofcourse.

I' ll have to side with PABowhntr. Your KE is to low, IMHO, to use mech' s. Personally, I don' t/wouldn' t use mech' s. I use Muzzy' s and they fly like darts at my current speed of 282 fps. I advise using 5" vanes with a healthy helical, if you are using a drop away rest. If not you can still use the helical but not as radical.

If you go to my website www.broadheadtests.com you will find what I have written on picking the right broadhead. It should be helpful to you. As for uping your KE numbers the only real way is to increase poundage, switch to a faster bow, or increase draw length. The Draw length is the worst way. Fit is much more important. Increasing draw weight is the cheapest and as long as you can handle it works the best. Just be careful about going to much at once and make sure your arrows are still spined properly. With 47 ft/lbs the only head I would even consider in a mechanical is the Rocket naildriver.

I agree with Kremer_Mike....use a good wide broadhead. If you want more speed and still have penitration then you might want to change arroe size. I shoot a Martin Magnum. Jag Aluminum Arrows and 70# draw 29" length and speed it 310 fps. I use 4" Feathers! Ultra fine toon your equipment will increase everything and tighten your paterns.....Practice, Practice, Practice makes for a good and Archer

Fixed. And only Fixed. Too me, mechanicals are just one more thing that can and do go wrong. The only benefit I can see with mech.s are they may be easier to tune than some fixed blades because they fly more like field points. there are alot of fixed blades that will shoot comparatively to mech.s under most circumstances.
I am basing all of this on direct experiences with these by myself and the people I hunt with. Now for people with very fast bows, carbon arrows with short straight fletch, etc. ,,, Mechanicals may be the only broadhead for the setup.
I have a friend that swears by them but he shoots the fastest, lightest, setup in our
group and no fixed blade would fly right with his 3 inch straight fletching. Each to his own. I' ll stick with my MUZZYS.[:-]

cottonfarmer,
Not to second guess you, but your speed and KE sound kind of low for 65lbs of pull and 28" draw. Are you sure those numbers are correct?

If you are indeed getting only 47 ft-lbs of KE, I wouldn' t shoot mechs. At 240 fps, you should be able to get fixed heads to fly perfectly and you' ll get better penetration. If you find that your KE is higher, you could probably use one of the smaller cut mechs. The size of the mech must match your KE level or you won' t get good performance.

Good luck.
