What is your Career? Your free time?

Well, I'm in school at UW-LaCrosse, and I plan my classes out so that I can have plenty of free time for the woods. I usually go for evenings from 12:00 pm on. I was coming to think what free time I will have once I am graduated and starting my career in Construction.

What does everyone do? How much time do you have to devote to the outdoors?

I will be working as a Project Manager out of school, hopefully. I can see where I will have very limited time for the woods once I start.

Western MA Hunter 12-15-2009 11:56 AM

I am an insurance broker / financial advisor here in Massachusetts. When not at work I spend time w/ my family. I have 5 & 3 year old daughters and my wife.
Other than than, I spend all free time deer, turkey, or bear hunting, fishing, ice fishing and going to the gym.

bowfly 12-15-2009 12:00 PM

I am a Research Scientist at a pretty big university in Pennsylvania (hint hint, their colors are blue and white) where I also instruct the engineers of tomorrow

If I am not working, I am on the trout water of central PA with my fly rod, or spinner fishing...I love to fish, live to hunt...so I do my far share of it too :)

I just bought a house and am a carpenter now too, spend a ton of time with my dogs, my girlfriend and family...life is good :D

Bob H in NH 12-15-2009 12:13 PM

Software engineer for a living, can be long hours, but "mostly" the 45ish hour week Monday to Friday, occassionally it gets crazy with 80+ hour weeks late nights and weekends, but not often.

For fun: soccer referee, It can cut into weekend hunting, but only if I chose to let it.

It's not the quantity of time, it's the quality. ;) I'm a forester, and I don't usually have much time during the week for hunting by the time I get off work, spend time with my young kids, etc. Occasionally (e.g. during the rut) I take an afternoon off work, otherwise most of my hunting and fishing is concentrated during the weekends.

Since you'll be starting a new job, you'll probably find that you have less vacation available right away, but over time you should be able to work something out that gives you a little more time for things outside of work hours. If not, I hope you love your job. ;) j/k

shottyhunter24 12-15-2009 12:21 PM

I like to spend time with my wife and family and play softball and golf during the off season.

Bowfreak4life 12-15-2009 05:24 PM

I am a Head Chef, And I am also a board member for Little League Baseball, I have a two year old little girl who loves to go in the woods with me, When I am not Cooking or involved with Baseball I am IN the woods hunting you can find me knee deep in the streams with my Fly rod.

rybohunter 12-15-2009 06:03 PM

I am an engineer(degree in chemical)

I had a job in manufacturing that had tons of vacation and my boss allowed me to adjust my hours during hunting season. BUt in general it was a terrible job.

Currently I work in more of an office setting with some field travel. The vacation time is terrible, gone are my after work hunts, but the pay is far better. But its not worth my loss of hunting time, I'm trying ot find something "better" even if its less money.

drockw 12-15-2009 06:04 PM

Electro-mechanical engineering student.

Shoot competitive archery tourneys year round as well. Spend most of my time doing that and keeping the woman happy.

Hunt when I can.

Also play guitar as well.

BvrHunter 12-16-2009 04:58 AM

I'm a Purchasing Agent for a Company that owns hospitals from coast to coast. I'm married with three young kids (6,3,2) two boys and a little girl :) all of whom start hunting with me around three years old, though my little girl begged to go this past sat. didn't last long lol she just likes wearing the clothes lol. In my spare time when I'm not changing diapers or washing dishes, I hunt, fish and have a motorcross passion. And I will be going to paramedics school after the first of the year.

burniegoeasily 12-16-2009 05:13 AM

I am a science Dept. head. In my free time, I build all my bows and hunting equipment, carpentry, ridding the hog, fishing, wakeboarding, playing with my kids, camping, and scratching in public.

Wheatley 12-16-2009 05:26 AM

I am a reliability engineer at an open pit coal mine. I work Monday - Friday each week and do not get to hunt after work anymore. I hunt on some weekends but usually it's vacation time which I do not have a whole lot of. It never seems to last long anyway. I love woodworking so I do alot of that in the evenings. With three kids I don't have much spare time.

mossberghunter93 12-16-2009 06:32 AM

I work at a commercial lawn care company in the summer and may start my own little company soon as well (just 4-5 yards) but in the mean time i am still in high school. when not doing school and working I like to hunt deer and anything else as well as hanging with my friends doing innocent dumb shtuff lol and messing with my truck.

longhunter 66 12-16-2009 06:43 AM

I work drive driving a truck and Im a firefighter, searchand rescue, and first responder. For off time I hunt, trap and fish with family and friends.

JNTURK 12-16-2009 07:01 AM

I work for CBP and in my spare time I am either hunting or spending it with my wife.

BGfisher 12-16-2009 07:06 AM

Retired at the age of 55. I'm 62 now. Every day is Saturday and every week is vacation time.

That being said I have several hobbies. #1 is archery (several venues). #2 is scuba diving in which I travel all over the world to persue. #3 is as a school bus driver which takes up some of my free time and gives me a little pocket money to persue the other two hobbies.

I would say the wife, kids, and grandkids eat most of the time that's left.

Down&OutHunting 12-16-2009 08:13 AM

Im a student at SIU and a farmer. So the hunting can be limited depending on harvest.

dyb3and88 12-16-2009 08:19 AM

I use to be an auto mechanic/shop manager. But after my back gave out 10 years ago, I am on permanent disability. I have 6 screws 2 rods and 2 cages in my lower back. The last 3 vertebra are screwed together. So I pretty much just work around the house and yard. Work on a car every now and then, just simple stuff now. I love to hunt and fish. The wife and I try and go out on the boat as much as we can in the summer. My wife has a state job. I have been getting injection in my back this month and hope that they can get me pain free, or at least take most of it away. I pretty much hate the winter after hunting season is over. Then I have nothing to do. No garden or lawn to take care of. I will build car models after hunting season is over to pass the time. I also love tinkering on my 86 Ford Ranger. Its got a mustang GT V8 with a supercharger. You can see pics in the posts about " lets see your meet wagons" All the kids are out of the house and on there own. My wife and I are 43 and where alone, yippee!!! lol. We get to come and go as we wish and have ice cream for dinner if we want, lol.

Sorry to hear about your back. I have a bad one, too, but not nearly as bad as yours. It's not debilitating for me. Of course my lower back doesn't bother me that much, but the neck has seen surgery 3 times in 15 years and have all the screws and titanium. I'm pretty much limited to 50# or less draw weight, but that's better than giving up.

What kind of shots are you getting? Steroids? Epidural?

I'm sure you do most of the cooking, right? If not your should learn. Like you my wife is the main bread winner these days and the least she deserves is a hot meal after 12 hours at work every day.

dyb3and88 12-16-2009 02:12 PM

I do 80% of the cooking and cleaning. Like you said, its the least I can do after she has been at work all day. I got the epidural injections. I have had them in the past. The Doctor that does the injection had me get a surgical opinion to see if there was something that surgery would fix before he would give me more injections. Nothing surgical will solve my problem they say. So back to the injections. They do work for me. I only have 24 to 48 hours of down time for the injections. And 4 to 6 months of relief. They worked good enough to where I could stop taking pain meds. But when I did that, I started having problems with my shoulder. Come to find out I have a bad disc in my neck also. But when I started taking my pain meds again with some aleve the shoulder problem went away. MRI showed a bad disc in my neck, but at this point if the meds are working, I'm not having surgery. They have also talked about doing a pump implant. That would put the meds right to the pain area with 1/4 of the dose. Not so sure about that though.

Canuck_2 12-16-2009 11:06 PM

dyb, sounds like you have some nasty problems but a good attitude dealing with them. Good for you.

I'm a retired geologist and high school teacher. However, I now do the occasional short-term mineral exploration program on a contract basis because I enjoy it. I just tell anyone that contacts me that I don't do cold and I don't do steep.:D

My wife is still working as head of a hospital imaging department and, like dyb3and88, I usually prepare dinners as well as look after other household chores. Free time activities include archery in various venues, rockhounding, wildlife photography, and having a ball with my 3 granddaughters.

Thank you. You have to have a good attitude. You can go through life pissed off, there is no fun in that. Sometime I wish I had some grandkids to watch, it would give me something to do. But the kids are still only 18 to 21 and need to get there heads on straight and good jobs before they bring kids into the world.

Don't worry. Your kids are like the rest of ours. One day they'll figure life out and the grandkids will come along quick enough. Then you'll fall in love again and have less time for yourself. I'll say this though. It's nice being able to hand them back at the end of the visit or baby sitting tenure.

I did forget to mention that my problems are the same as yours. Degenerative disc disease. I think the problem with my lower back is scar tissue from my previous surgery 3 years ago. It hurts all the time, but gets worse with barametric changes, but it's not going to stop me; just slows me down at times. The neck is good right now considering I only have three vertebre (spelling) left. C3,4, and 5 are fused. I'm a little limited in how far I can twist my head, but I adjusted to that. It's the pain I used to have that almost drove me to suicide--that's not an option any more.

Shoulder pain? Let's not talk about that. Some of it's just my age and my body paying me back for the dumb stuff I did when I was young and dumb. Ibuporfin takes care of it pretty well when needed.

Keep up the good attitude. As you said, you can go through life pissed off about it or you can look ahead and get on with life.

It will be nice to have grandkids some day to spoil. Wined them up and send them home, lol. Then the kids can see what they did to us when they where young. lol. Pay back.... lol. Ya the shoulder thing kind of caught me off guard. A disc is pinching a nerve in my neck that goes to my shoulder. Until I cant move my arm, I am leaving well enough alone. The Aleve keeps the swelling down enough to where its not bothering me right now. Here is what my lower back looks like. This x-ray was taken when they where doing the epidural injections.

I am an Environmental, Health, and Safety Coordinator for the Worlds #1 Lingerie Company (HINT: We employ Heidi Klum! :) ). I love my job and make my own hours so I hunt and fish as much as I can but also find time for my girlfriend, family, and friends!

Bible_Man 12-18-2009 09:33 AM

I am a full-time minister. I work primarily with the youth (they call me the youth minister) at the congregation I attend, but also do many other things. I absolutely love my job, and would venture to say that I have the most flexible hours possible. Some office time is expected, but more than that, I interact with people. Kids have school during the day and adults have work, so my time spent with teens/pre-teens and their families in the evenings is where many of my hours come in. As long as I am accomplishing all of the things I am responsible for, how I spend my time is mostly up to me. This gives me lots of time to hunt. Don't get me wrong...I work a lot. I just added up the time I have spent working this week so far, (lunch time on Friday) and it is at 51 hours. And the week is by no means over. But it is truly a blessing...I get paid to do what I love to do. Wish more people could find that in their lives.

As for free time, hunting takes almost all of it during season. I have almost no free time in the summer in my line of work, doing things with kids so much while they are out of school. I spend a good deal of time with my wife. This happens throughout the year now that she is getting into hunting as well! I play Halo 3 online with some friends from college once in a while. I love fantasy sports. I play guitar. I study Jesus' ministry so that I can be more effective in mine. That's about it I reckon.

RuttnStrutt 12-18-2009 11:53 AM

I'm currently working as an Online Sales/Media Manager with Rutt and Strutt Outfitters in Southeast Missouri. I've worked several jobs and I enjoy changing the "scenery" from time to time. I've lived in Charlotte North Carolina, Orlando, Springfield MO, and have done many things in my 24 years of existence.

I am a big part of the automotive and motorcycle scene so I have a lot of time dedicated to Car Clubs. I also do photography on the weekends when I'm not working or at car/motorcycle events. Hunting during the week is not possible for me, seeing as how I work 11 hrs + a day and all my daylight is spent indoors. Hoping to get to take the bow out a couple more times before the season ends here in MO.

US Army Drill Sergeant. What ever time my wife allows. Although I bought her a bow for x-mas. She's wanted to learn how to shoot for awhile. Hopefully we can hunt together next yr!!!! Then I won't have to wait for the glare when I say I think I'm gonna head out huntin today.

sharpizzio 12-21-2009 08:15 AM

I bought my girl a bow last year to hunt with me. She likes it, but if it is cold, dark, raining, snowing, windy, or if she has something better in mind, it is next to impossible to get her to go. Oh and that "glare" you speak of never goes away. LOL!

Started out after high school as a Fireman for 10 years. Switched over to the police department and am going on 27 years. Trained Serbian and Albanian officers in Kosovo for 2 years. Retired once and made the mistake of going back to work when I should have simply found another hobby. Looking to buy some acreage and retire for good in the next 5-7 years. Hunting with my brother is still my passion as is riding the Wing.

sorry to here about your bad luck.i lost my job in march.no job for 4 mounths.found new one in july.was truck driving.had to go back to turning wrenches.(industral mach. repair)not great money but good people to work with.i found it on craggs list.good luck to you, don't give up hope.

Like Bob Dole's, my job is fine, "inside work, no heavy lifting," not that that stops me from complaining.

We have flex time plus I'm an old phart s.t. I get 6 weeks vacation. So I can come in at 6, work 6 hours, and get off at noon using only two hours vacation (semi officially).

I made a road trip up to "tornado watch" near La Crosse back in the day (or was it Eau Claire?). We had our first beers about 9:30am. I'll bet they can't do tornado watch anymore - even in Wis. one has to be a little more discreet about their DWI.

adam11082 12-26-2009 05:20 AM

I've worked as an Environmental Inspector for a municipality in NY for almost 10 years. Not bad considering I'm only 28. Other than hunting and fishing as much as possible, I spend time with family and friends.
