RE: how many years
I took my first deer on my 2nd season at the age of 15
|
RE: how many years
Took about 6 years i believe. Started bowhunting at 15 and took my first archery deerat 21.
|
RE: how many years
It took me about 90 minutes worth of bowhunting to stick my first deer. On the next three hunts, I scored on two more deer and a hog. I'd had four hunts totaling less than 10 hours in the woods and had four animals down to show for it. It was more than enough to totally hook me on bow hunting.
That said... my ability as a hunter (or lack there of) had next to nothing to do with my success. I was hunting a target rich environment on management doe and hog hunts. The property's caretaker told me exactly where to go and what to look for. All I did was follow directions, hold still and make the shot. |
RE: how many years
Took 3 days after i started bow hunting ;)
|
RE: how many years
It only took one year. I started when I was 14 years old. I was shooting a Martin Jaguar. That year I took a mule deer doe. and a cow elk.
Having never hunted whitetail before. When I got stationed in Michigan I was excited! My first season I did not shoot a deer. I could have but chose to pass on immature deer. Last season I took my first Whitetail. a 100" 4x4! |
RE: how many years
the first year with a bow in hand i put down a fat doe and a nice 8pt
|
RE: how many years
Are killing OR tagging different options?
It took me a few years to "tag" a deer, but I killed a 2 deer & a bear the first year hunting (found them a few days too late).:( To top it off it was all in the same weekend (a story for another time)...[X(] I almost gave up the archery sport, due to my foolish/uneducated/inexperienced ways! Now that I've matured into an archery tagging machine, I know longer take risky shots and give the animal more time to die before bumping them into oblivion... |
RE: how many years
I score in my 1st year of bowhunting. Of course I had "deer" hunted for decades prior, only the weapon was different.
|
RE: how many years
Still waiting...this will be my 3rd year. I had a chance last year at a very small 4 pointer, but passed on the shot.

|
RE: how many years
mine took me about 3 hours on the first opening day LOL.
i got prety lucky i guess i had shot and shot all summer...sometimes 2-3 hours at a time every day....both of my brothers have bow hunted for a long time and they told me it would probably take me a few seasons to get my first one....well at 9 am on opening morning i had a button come way to close to my stand at 17 yards and ate the buidness end of a muzzy tipped shaft and ran 50 yards....i wasnt working at the time so i drove around to my brothers job site with the tailgate of the truck down blowin the horn jsut to make sure they saw it...was pretty good to prove them wrong and i have done it more than once since then with hunting and fishin |
RE: how many years
I bought my first bow in early December one year and didn't see a deer theremaining 2 months. Opening day of the following season I got my first bow kill, followed it up with another just before rifle season started.
...Now the next year I missed multiple times and ate both tags:( |

I have killed a deer every season except one:) so i guess I am one of the lucky ones.. |
RE: how many years
8 Seasons for me,but I learned alot about deer in those 8 years,I hunted from the ground and learned how to stalk and get close. My first few years I didn't even draw on a deer. Also ya gotta be where the deer will be or near,I would hunt small lots in town when I just began, folks would really be suprised how many deer bed in these small spots.
|
RE: how many years
techniclly I would have to say my second season, although my first season consisted of just one bowhunt, the offseason I got serious about it and bought a new bow and setup and that year I killed4 deer with my bow,3bucks and 1 doe.My first buck ever was with a bow and up until that time only gun hunted,I was 22 yrs old when I started bowhunting.I still gun hunt but I have killed more bucks with my bow than with my gun.
|
RE: how many years
I shot one on opening night my first year. A small doe.. I was very very lucky and I have been hooked ever since. I have never shot a deer with my shotgun here in MI though.... I have hunted hard, morning and night, and still have had no luck with the Remington. I have recorded 4 bow kills in the last three years. Guess I'll stick to bowhunting!!
|
RE: how many years
It was my 3rd season. In the late 60's early 70's the deer were few and far between in this area.
It is not unusual for me to see more deer now in a week of hunting than I would see all 3 months of the season back then;) Dan |
RE: how many years
I took my first deer on my 2nd season it was a little spike, but it could've been a huge 8 point the way i felt......

ORIGINAL: MeanV2 ORIGINAL: OneMustFall I took my first deer on my 2nd season it was a little spike, but it could've been a huge 8 point the way i felt...... Dan As for myself I was 13 years old when I took my 1st deer. I started bowhunting at 12 years old but only went out a handful of times my 1st year. The 2nd year I was much more Into It and I was able to shoot a young deer the 2nd evening out that year. The good old days!! |
RE: how many years
Nothing my first season (hunted 1/2 the season).
Took 5 whitetailsthe second season; 9 whitetails and 1 turkeythe third season and 7 whitetailslast year. |
RE: how many years
I believe it was my 3rd season. A lot of work. In fact, my first bowkill was the first rack I kept of any buck I had ever killed. Since that buck I have kept all my buck racks.
Year 1 I missed on an awesome 8 pointer at sundown. Shot low at 20 yards. Year 2 I missed on a beautiful 8 pointer I called with a doe bleat. I shot into gues what.....his rack! Year 3, mid-season I began to have serious doubts about my hunting abilities. Luckily I set up about 20 feet high in a tree bordering a creek and buck leaped over the creek chasing after a doe. I shot him at less than 1 yard with a gut shot. Then the 7-8 tracking job was on until I finally found him! Talk about a sense of pride and relief. I caught the bow bug that day and haven't looked back. Most of my problems stemmed from the fact that I was not set up close enough to thicker cover and I was rushing my shots because I was not confident in my hunting/shooting abilities with my bow. |
RE: how many years
it took me a few months after i started bow hunting. i started 9 years ago.
|
RE: how many years
about a month in 2008 im 15
|
RE: how many years
Itook up bowhunting in 1956-took my 1st Deer (a yearling Doe) 2 years later in 1958. I have never gun hunted any biggame & now have been blessed to have bowhunted many many varieties of biggame.
I still remember that shot as if it were yesterday-2009 is the start of my 53rd year of bowhunting. I was fortunate to have taken 2 wild hogs in Oklahoma & 2 Whitetails in Iowa in 2008. Good Luck to you this year. |
RE: how many years
I know I'm in the minority, but I got my first buck on the second day of the season my first year bowhunting. 8 pointer that scored about 110 or so. I'm hooked now!!!
|
RE: how many years
About 30 minutes after I got in the treestand for the very first time with a bow!
It's kind of a funny story- I had just started to learn/been shooting for about 3 weeks and my Bear cracked a (plastic) cam or module (I had no clue at the time which piece was what) 2 days before opening day.The bow was used so I headed up to the shop (that I later worked at) that night- a Thursday night and bought a brand new Golden Eagle, sight, Overdraw plus rest, and arrow. Was tuned up with broadheads on Friday, drove 4 hours Saturday morning and Killed the deer that evening @ 4:30 It's been all downhill ever since ![]() |

|
RE: how many years
I'll be on year 3 in September..still not even a shot but one blown opportunity on a doe.
Archery is making me a better hunter though..I'm finding the game and getting closer each year..I hunt in a very tough WMA.. |
RE: how many years
It took me 3 or 4 years I do not recall exactly.. It was a yearling doe I had missed the day before and finally connected the next day. It was a some had stated what could of been a monster buck it didn't make any difference. It was after I had purchased a new bow as my old bow I never really felt comfortable with it. Up here also the deer numbers are low and getting a shot at one is tough going. Today in this area it's bucks only no matter what is the weapon of choice. I had a few chances at does but didn't see any bucks last fall. I also up graded my bow this year as my last one was 20 + years old and what a difference the newer ones are..
