If you could pick one state to whitetail hunt next year, what state would you choose? Tag availabilty/cost not a factor, just one state that you could hunt, your choice. I'd choose Ohio, far enough from home that I actually felt like I went "away" and the quality of deer taken lately have been impressive.

I'm going back to IL because of what I experience this year. I have paybacks to make on a certain veteran whitetail if he's there or not!:D

I love hunting New York, i hate the season, and theres no over abundance of big bucks, but once I get into that stand none of that matters. I sure do like my time out here...

I'd have to say Kansas. It's got my Interest and I may have an Invitation out there next year from a certain HNI'er. We'll see.:D

There are lots of places I'd like to get to.

MN/Kyle, I agree, that area of the Milk seems like it would be a dynamite place to hunt.

I wouldn't mind finding a good outfitter in Indiana as well. Illinois and Kansas get a ton of exposure, for good reason, but I have seen some exceptional bucks coming out of Indiana.

I'll play along...Iowa..but I really love hunting here in Va if the weather is good and the woods are calm from all deer hounds...I like my chances here for big bucks just as good as anywhere else..

Any state but Maine, I love it here and the terrain is as beautiful as you will see anywhere, but our whitetail population stinks. The taxidermist I took my buck to told me that he was talking to someome from the state fish and wildlife dept and he told him that if we have another winter like last year the whole state could be shut down to whitetail next year. It is estimated that 60% of our deer population was lost to winter kill last year.

Man, thats tough.

I love the photos Magicman posts, I love the deer I see being taken from the "Golden Triangle"...What a decision.

Actually, I've considered this, recently. I plan to move out of NJ and to a more rural State(yuppies get to me).

I want to live in a rural, agricultural area that also has rich, deep, forest land.

SE Ohio is looking like an option, as well as Western Iowa. Who knows, but I sure as hell hope its not NJ !!
Drop me a PM, I know of a 3bed/2Ba with 70acres for $130k!!!! And another home with 20acres and a pond for $65k!!! Both in Muskingum County, home of nearly 500 over 150" bucks killed!!!!

To the original topic, for pure hunting, Northern NM or Southern CO would be my choice.

I'd have to stick with my home state stomping grounds here in Iowa. Kansas would be next on my list followed by a trip to Canada. (I knowCanada isn't a state;)).

If money/time/travel was no object, I'd be headed to Iowa.

If all I had to choose just one state to hunt for the whole season - and was forced to work/hunt as usual: Ohio.

Matt/PA, you may be right about SW Montana. I have a cousin who moved out there two years ago. He's north of Missoula in a little town called Seeley Lake. He wants me to come out and hunt with him some year. He said there are enormous whitetails there, but hardly anyone hunts them. Everyone is after the elk and muleys in the area.

I'm going to say Iowa and this is coming from an IL. boy. Our state is heading south fast IMO. Iowa is the new IL.

Probably Indiana for the simple fact I am part owner with my siblings on the family farm. Crazy, but I don't hunt it I guess because I spend too much time hunting here. Not the best for whitetails on the farm, but it does border some public land.

May be right?! :D.........brother I lived out there (SW Montana below Livingston) for a short time and I don't think there is a day that goes by that I don't wishI was back.
It's such a breathtaking place, just trust me if you can find a way to get out there MAKE IT HAPPEN. Even if you only go once it will be the trip of a lifetime and will forever be etched into your eyeballs.[:-]

All those Primos whitetail bowhunts you see from Montana with the mountains in the background? That aint eastern Montana.
