I believe there is some truth to that. In my area you tend to see racks with the same characteristics.

I have asked several differentpeople in Canada why they thought the racks on their bucks are so dark, almost all of them said it's from the tree's they rub. They say the sap from spruces and other evergreen tree's gets on the antlers and stains them. There might be some truth to this. Check out the base of theantler on this buck that was taken. You can see where it gotpolished (lighter) from rubbing.

Well, where me and my dad have been hunting. (Bedford Co. Va) There are both, tall and wide. Ill post some pics.

Wide: 14 1/2


Wide: 13 in.


And Tall



But, maybe this is off topic. But I would kill a wide deer over a tall deer anyday. I like the looks better.

I think genetics make up most of how a rack grows, (width, height etc)and diet determines how big.
