6" bolt? How much are you gonna sink into the tree?
I figured I would go by what Treehopper's system uses, 2.5" into tree with a 6" peg....I can go longer if I figure out I want some more foot room.

I have a size 13 boot and there is plenty of room for my foot on the 6" pegs when they are 2.5" into the tree. I wouldnt go longer...

I don't like damaging trees. Can't be good for them or the state would allow them on public land. Lone Wolfs for me. Plus..if I was a lndowner and seen them in my trees I would probably tell the guy to keep off of my land if he wants to treat my trees like that. Low to no impact is my motto.

Has anyone given thought to falling on these bolts/lags/screw ins? I suggest tree sticks or a ladder type. Regardless of which type try to find enclosed steps (D shaped). Falls can and do happen, and which would you rather hit at 100 mph? a exposed step or a bar? Been there done that and it hurts like a witch !!!

That's all they usedwhere I hunted in Alberta. And yes, you do need more than 3"ofbolt sticking out.:D These guys have 6"-8" of bolt to step on. The longer your bolt, the longer you can leave them before the tree starts growing over them, rendering them useless.

I never liked them at all, always seemed slippery to me...

This brings back bad memories :Dback in the day we drove RR spikes in
And then we got modern and went to 8 inch bridge spikes. And then someone in our club found that the cotton picker spindles would really do the job. You just had to wear safety glasses as the hammer would bust off pieces of the gear spline and they hurt like hell. LOL But talk about something that kept your foot from slipping. The local farmers went through a lot of the cotton picker spindles. We just used their throw aways.

Here is a pic of the ones I am using. I bought the heat shrink tubing and put it on the main part of the bolt and also wrapped the tip in electrical tape. I did this to silence them from "clinking" together and I gotta say, once you have a tree set up with the holes, you just slip them in as you go up and take them out as you leave. Virtually no trace that you were there and you can use 10 steps for all of your trees total. No need to buy tons of steps and they just slip in and out. Conceptually I really like the idea. I have two trees set up for them now and it is really quiet and easy to set up as well as very light to carry in.

I also use this heat shrink tubing for a set of rod style steps that I just bought. Nice and quiet on them too.
