This is kind of a silly question. If your not getting better you should call it quits. I equate "getting better" with learning something.

I think the learning curve can be GREATLY accelerated by the individual. Same as anything else in life. If you really apply yourself and have a willingness to learn what's in front of you, you can become much better at what you do in a much shorter amount of time. Like others have said learn something (anything) each and everytime you go in the woods and you become that much better no matter how small it may be.

I also believe there is something inside each individual. A hunter brain or instinct so to speak [8D]. Just like there are people that can take all the golf lessons in the world and never become a good golfer. There are those who will spend countless hours in a stand and never really "get it". Which is fine by the way.... just some observations.

I worked for Deere for 13 years, taught service schools for the first few years...We had a saying..."Some guys have 20 years of experience and
some guys have 1 year experience, 20 times"...

Another part of the equation...We have about 3 1/2 months of deer season down here in NC...Does that make us better because we have more time in the woods??? Maybe, maybe not because we also have more deer...

I'll also point this out...Being raised as a squirrel hunter made me a much better deer hunter, many of the skills transition over...In addition, turkey hunting makes you a much better deer hunter, you surely learn that a deer is almost a push over compared to turkey hunting...

I also think it is a big advantage if you spend time in the woods year round...Fortunately, we own 3 farms and I've found some of the best hunting spots and seen some of the best bucks in the summer months while doing work on the farms...

In the end, it's up to each hunter to decide how much to put into this sport, like many things in life, the more you invest, the more you are paid back...

Many people do not try to get any better at hunting and just do the same thing over and over even ifthere strategieshave not brought them any success.

So some people get better and others do not.

I dont see how anyone could go into the woods and not learn anything. I would assume you would have to go in there blindfolded with earplugs in for that to happen!

It is up to the individual to apply what they've experienced in order to make it a learning experience.

I have a brother-in-law that spends a lot of hours in the woods each fall and he is still as clueless as he was when he first started hunting!!

I know guys that just don't pay attention to whats around them. I don't think they learn anything new. One guy at my lease has hunted out of the same box blind, over the same feeder, for the past 11 years. He just doesn't hunt anywhere else. He kills a doe or two every year and maybe a spike occasionally. He has never killed a mature buck. (FWIW I haven't either but I'm doing my best to learn all I can) He also does zero scouting other than a trailcam on his feeder. How can he learn more?

That's pretty much what I was getting at. I know people that hunt their rumps off and don't seem to have any more knowledge about hunting than 10 years ago. Get out of their truck, jump in a stand, hunt, get down and go home. They don't want to know how, what, where, or why. Again... that's fine and dandy if that's what floats their boat. I just don't understand it sometimes. That being said......... Me and Germ still suck [8D]
