Ancient warrior??

Guy's,
I got my antlers and jaw bone back tonight and my suspicions may have been confirmed. I saw this buck last year from my stand at the end of October. Back then I guestimated him to be 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 and to score around 180". Before I even recovered him this year I was telling my brother that I thought he was bigger last year. When my brother asked me what I thought he'd score this year, I guessed him at 163. Well, I nailed it right on the head! [:-](See official score card). I noticed that he seemed to be going down hill.

I have the jaw bones from 18 mature bucks that I have shot and aged them. After comparing them to the buck I got last year which I aged at 6 1/2, I believe that this one may be 8 1/2!! I plan on taking it over to my buddy who has taken deer this old and older and comparing with his jaw bones. Once I get them cleaned up a bit, I'll post pics of them (next week).

Another thing to note about this buck is that he had a huge, deepgash almost from eye to eye. If you look hard, you can see the line on his forehead. His right eye was almost swollen shut and infected. If that isn't bad enough, when my Taxi boned out the jaw, he found that it was broken!!! This buck had lost a lot of weight but I thought it was from rutting. It may have been because his stomach was full of corn when I dressed him out. He still weighed 201 lbs., but his back had that boney ridge runner look to it. I wonder if he would have made it through the winter!!??

What do you think?

Old warrior is right. You can see that in his old face. I bet he was feeling his age. The buck didn't look to good either.:D:DJ/K cant wait to see the teeth picks.

IAhuntr 11-20-2008 04:32 PM

RE: Ancient warrior??

He certainly has the old rugged look. By the bone mass he carries out to the ends of his beams and the mass of his tines I would certainly haveguessed him to be no younger than five.I'd be very interested in seeing a pic of his jawbone. Please don't think I'm questioning your findings for a minute but just that you don't get to see a 7+ y/o buck every day and I've been trying to hone up on the tooth wear aging thing myself.

RE: Ancient warrior??

If your suspicions are correct then he is more then2X as old as the biggest buck i have ever see.

Speaking of, you mentioned you saw him last year and estimated 180"...how big do you think he was in his prime (or do you think that was his prime?)?. And is he the biggest buck you have seen from stand?

RE: Ancient warrior??

My honest first thought when I saw that buck's picture the other daywas "WOW, that may be the oldest nastiest looking buck I've ever seen."[:-]
Sounds like the perfect animal to take as I couldn't imagine him making it through the winter....1/2 blind, infected, broken jaw, worn down etc.

A full life and a fitting end for an old warrior that's for sure, congrats Greg!

all the gushing and glowing about how GregH is "da man" and most accomplished bowhunter ever to grace this place is disproven by the man himself. I mean the dude shot adeer that was blind andso old it had to have lost all sense of smell and sound, with one hoof already in the grave. Hell Greg, you did this buck a favor. We'll call it a mercy killing.

I don't think that this buck ever hit much over 185", but I could be wrong.

Last year he was the biggest buck I saw from stand but I had to settle for a 170"+ [8D]

I've seen 3 typicals that were bigger, I shot one of them too.[:-]

I have it on good authority that your the man Greg [8D]. I think its pretty cool that you saw him last year and then harvested him this year on the 1st sighting.

IMO his face tells the story, and he looks mighty old. Must have been part of the army of 300.

Congrats again Greg! The story keeps getting better and better. I've heard of does living into the 8's and beyond but a buck of that caliber is something special. A true warrior who had his day in the sun and went down fighting. Apoke in theeye and broken jaw deserves some recognition. Wow!

Im really no envious I would have never shot that deer. Hes too old to end up as meat on someones plate. Whether you like it or not I DO NOT agree with that bow kill.. Too old meats gonna taste like crap. And hes old Hes at least 10-12 years old. And he deserved far better in my opinion..Now thats my opinion but even here in PA thats a monster. But still would have let him live.

I dont know maybe Im not a hunter that kills anything with a rack like some guys. Im sorry I have a higher set of standards then you guys. Im sorry Im not gonna kill a spike either. But some guys on here would kill fawns. I dont get some of you guys why not just let PITA in here and look at some of these posts make it easier for them to shut hunters down everywhere.

Bro, you just said you hunted for meat, but now it's for the antlers, but it's not. You're making NO sense whatsoever. Also we will let Pain In The Ass in here (PITA), oh wait, looks like we already did.;)

LOL...you guys lighten up..I understand Nissan.

He is a trophy meat hunter. He won't settle for just anything...Spikes won't do, nor would monster bucks, it has to be the perfect middle aged deer, that passes the taste test. Because really, Pita is only against the killing of monster bucks and spikes, they couldn't give a care in the world about a small 6 pointer. Jeesh fellas, quit opening your mouth and letting ignorance into this thread...some PITA could be lurking.

OH, yea, almost forgot...only time the bow leaves the hook is at the most inopportune time when a camera is nowhere to be found (picked this one up from DT[8D])....that is to be addedto the stipulations as well. GregH only shot this deer because he had a camera...No camera= no shot and you know it...freakin inhumane brutes. He had to get back to his day job of trucking/r&d engineering, so cut Nissan some slack...hes waitin to upload his pics of his monster, shot from the treestand which he magically doesn't ever hunt from, because only cowards hunt from treestands as they are unfair.

So all you hunters with cameras wanting a crack at the monster of your woods, boy is there something wrong with you guys.[:'(] I wouldn't be caught dead in deer camp with a lot like you.

No worries Nissan, I got your back...Greg should have just gave up and bought a BOWTECH....dude, seriously, I get it.;)
