TREATED WOOD!!!! If you are set on building them, treated wood is a necessity. You can buy some real nice ladders these day for not too much money...I fell from a homemade stand when I was younger, one that I made, and had all the confidence in, I woudl have sworn you could have put a bulldozer on it. Trouble is, you can't see inside the wood to know which piece is good or bad. 2nd to last step broke in half, and down I went 14'. Last wooden stand I've been, and ever plan to be in. And these were all constructed with treated 2X6 material, steps, rails, everything.

I fell from a wooden step last week from only 5 feet...the nails sheered off inside the tree. I fell and twisted my ankle up good and hit the ground hard. I will not do the wooden stand thing again. Many places sell quality hang-on stands for under $50.

I built one over the summer. Typical 12 foot ladder with a seat. Weighed 3 tons and will eventually rot away. But, I hada lot ofextra lumber and time so it was an evening project. We used wood stands exclusively for 20+ years w/o problems, but switched over to metal ladders and lock ons a few years ago. Much lighter and safer, plus they are so much easier to move if needed.

I build my own metal hang on stands. There solid and much more sturdy then any store bought stand. In saying that though they are a pain to put up and also a tad noisy when putting up. In the future I'll possibly be buying one of these store bought stands and see what I think of them.
If your going to build your own hang on stands, you better damn well know what the heck your doing!! It's not only your life on that stand, It might be a friend or a family member also that's trusting there life to your building. Bottom line Is, know your stuff or don't even think twice about building one!!!!
