RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

With a compound, I go for speed. But with my trad gear, I go with a greater foc so I tend to have slow arrows pushing a heavy head. I do so for penetration plus it makes for a quieter shot. It seems like I see the impact on every bow, fast or slow. The few times I have not seen the arrow make impact, I just read the blood on the arrow.

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

Jeff if you don't mind could you list exactly what you are using on your arrows including type of arrow to get such a heavy and FOC arrow. (vanes, wraps, tips, etc.)

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

PSE Black Mamba arrows (28") - 260.4gr.
100gr muzzy brass insert - 100gr (duh)
100gr BH - 100gr
4" QS vanes - 25gr
nock - 9gr
6" reflective wrap - (?? gr)

Looks like +/- 500gr. I may go to a 125gr BH....if it looks like it'll be under 500gr.

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

Would it be necessary for such a heavy arrow to shoot the 4 in vanes for stabilization?

GMMAT 11-14-2008 04:48 PM

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

Not sure if it's necessary....but I shoot a Bowtech...and I'm tired as heck of dealing with clearance issues with Blazers.

I won't shoot 'em again.

How do you determine the correct spine for your arrow

I usually shoot feathers but not sure how they will fit into my new arrow setup

Matt:

For the distances I shoot, here, bowhunting whitetails and turkeys....I don't worry about spine....as long as I have PLENTY.

Matt/NC 11-14-2008 05:13 PM

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

I am in the same area as you so if I go with the FMJ's at .300 spine would that be sufficient?

GMMAT 11-14-2008 05:16 PM

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

I'm not the one to ask. I have no idea.

Matt/NC 11-14-2008 05:21 PM

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

I am like you also considering shooting a heavier arrow. With my new bow more than likely shooting IBO speeds over 340 I am interested in shooting a heavier arrow, that will still be going 290 +. Iam considering the FMJ's at 12 gr. per in.with tracer nock, 125 grain broadhead, wrap and vanes.

In my 1st response to this thread I simply gave equipment details and results.
Might as well put it back on top with an additional comment ;)
The original post mentioned seeing the arrow in flight as a benefit / reason for shooting a heavier arrow.
I shoot a little differently than most people,I keep primaryfocus on the sight pinwith the target is in secondary focus. I only see the arrow in flight at longer ranges. At typical hunting distances if I see the arrow fly I've pulled the shot. I usually shoot around 280+ and even with my primary focus on the pin I know if I've made a good shot even though I don't see the arrow fly. It works (has worked) for me.

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

I'm a old instinctive shooter. I look at the spot that I want to hit and maybe I will see the arrow hit the target are on a deer abig holeappears. Target primaryfocus and the sight is secondary. Some good shooter shoot the other way around. If I don't hit what I'm aiming at I will have no ideal were the arrow hits. If I'm watching the arrow I will drop my armto see were the arrows going a will make a bad shot. Even when I shot old slow recurve and instinctive I would not watch the arrow that makes forbad form. Seeing the arrow in fight is not a benefit but, a bad thing if you want to shoot will. You must concentrate on hitting your target not how the arrow flying.

They built these for me today....and I'll have them to begin sighting in, tomorrow.

Final tally on arrow weight is 551gr. Looking forward to shooting them.

Thursday night I'll be building up some new 29" Axis 300's w/ the Muzzy 100 gr. HIT insert, 125 gr. head, 7" wraps and Blazers. Should come in at about 570 grains. I'll let you know how the new DXT likes them after the weekend.

No way I could, Kyle....as I'm not sure which one I'll use, yet. I'm gonna shoot mech's and fixed and make a decision.....but it'll probably be a fixed head for a while.

I swear I'd hear that dang song EVERY morning on my drive to my hunting spot & then it would get stuck in my head all day. I wanted to leap from my tree!

I guess I don't under stand thispost too im ocd. I have shot around 400 gr. and 100 gr.broadheads for years and have shot game quartering away and through the paddle bone. I shot down on one and hitabout the last rig out and the arrow came out under his neck and was stuck in the ground. Maybe it's because I shoot supper tuned. tight grouping,70 lb bows and heads like the thunderhead and now the G5 montes, But I blow through every thing deer up to elk like they were a card broad box, I havepassed through two bull one at about 25 yards and one at 40 yards. I'll will say because I can't remember not passing through one so, 98 % of the time. The only time I can remember not is when I try ed some mechanical heads and when I shot aluminums and thats been a lot of years ago. I shot a buck this year at 25 yards and was a little to far forward just missed the paddle bone going in and right through the middle of it low going out and the arrow past through like he was made of card broad and sticking in the ground about 6 inch's. Maybe if I were shooting 50 lb bow areI hada real noisy bow. All my bows have be supper quit shooting, have good speed and put out a lots of KE.

Good luck on every thing just my opinion
I'm with Bowdoc, I don't remember the last time I DIDN'T have a pass through. I too shoot 70 pounds, down from my previous 76. I shoot fixed heads. Last year went from THunderheads(which never failed me) to Shuttle T's. Hell, these girls on the hunting shows who can hardly pull their bows get pass throughs all the time. I'd be worried and seek a change.

RE: Slowing your hunting arrow down?

After some tinkering in the shop.....I came up with a much lighter arrow than I was goingto use. Here's why....

1st....the Muzzy inserts wouldn't fit the arrows. So....we used the std. insert and collar provided and came up with a 470gr. arrow. That's still over 100gr. heavier than my previous arrow.

At 60#'s....my hunting arrow (former) was being pushed 276fps. At the same draw weight....the new 470gr arrow is being pushed 249fps. KE goes up with the new setup.....but DOWN when we add a 125gr. tip.

So....I think I've found the "optimal" in KE AND Momentum with the new arrow weight. If the 100gr inserts had fit....I'm afriad to know what my arrow speed would have been. I just know it wouldn't have been pretty.

Happy it worked out the way it has. Hopefully I'll get to test it out, REAL soon.

Thanks for all of the advice and tips. I think I've found something I can work with.

You got more patience than I do, I can't wait to try out new setups. I'd stick the first slickhead that didn't have a buck on her bumper
