First mature buck ever at 20 yards tonight and......got winded

Hunting and playing the wind in areas with ridges is always difficult because you have to worry about thermals and with the countours of the land the wind doesn't necessarily move in the direction that the weather channel says because the land features change it. Another consideration is the calling. If you are going to call it is a good idea to put some kind of break downwind of you if you can. This way if the buck tries to get downwind, which they usually do, the break will hopefully funnel them close enough to your stand that you can get a shot before they get downwind.
In your case the wind just swirled at an inopportune moment. There is no way to predict that or deal with it that I know of. It's funny though how it always swirls right when a deer is there.[:@]

Thanks guys. I actually had my back facing a bunch of timber that had blow over. It would have been very difficult for that buck to come in from behind me. Like I said before, it is like that buck took the only travel route that did not allow me to shoot him! 5 more steps is all I needed. Oh well, I don't give up easy and I hope to be out there on Monday, I have to work this weekend. I saw two bucks, a 3 point and a 6 point this morning. The smaller buck was chasing a doe and from the looks of it someone had shot him early this year at a terrible angle and caused a nasty wound that was healing. He walked right under my treestand at 0930, and the 6 point came by at 1120.
