The problem I'm having is the knife will not hold an edge. Like I said, it's not a quality knife. It's the one that came free with my Buckmaster's[:'(][:'(] subscription a few years ago. It's time to upgrade.

This is the knife that Matt/PA and I have. Matt turned me onto this custom knife maker last year. I couldn't be happier....and it's something I'll hand down to my son.

For skinning I use a 3.5 thin pocketknife and for the rest I use a 8" boning/fillet knife.

Jeff, that's a sweet knife no doubt. I personally prefer a break down knife. But who made that knife?

I use a fillet knife that is just to get it started and around the legs and such. and to sharpen them we use a hand held broadhead sharpener it works great and it is only like 6 dollars.

I use a little pocket knife for most everything. My favorite is a folding Gerber Gator with about a 3 1/5 inch blade. I have a whole collection of Buck knifes that just don't get used. I have a kitchen full of Henckel knifes that I love for chopping and cooking, but for deer work it's hard to beat the handy little rubber gripped Gerber. It doesn't keep it's edge like a Buck, but it only takes about 3 whacks on a stone to bring it back, that's why I love it. It'll do a deer or two without any problem before it needs some work. I use it to cut out joints, bone, skin.. anything to do with getting it in the fridge.

I have a couple of hand made knives that I like, they have blades made from a file and sharpen up real easy...I pull them out when we have 4-5 to skin, so I don't have to stop and sharpen while skinning...

But, frankly a good Buck is all you need...Last night I skinned and boned out a deer for my buddy with my Buck pocket knife that I carry year round...
It's a drop point and the blade is only 2 1/2 inches long, it's really all you need...

Most inexperienced hunters actually use a blade that is too long for skinning...A 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 inch blade is all you need for deer...

I've had manyknives over the years; however, the one that I treasure most is the Schrade 141OT. Razor sharp and holds an incredible edge! I believe Schrade went out of business, but you can still find the knives.

They're drastically under priced if you ask me.
