From Deer and Deer hunting magazine ( if anyone can find it on line) Dec. issue, the oldest recorded doe ever shot was 22 years old. And the oldest collared buck in captivity was 20 years 10 months. The title of the article is 25 things you probably didn't know about deer. So I can believe this about the 17 year old.

I read the D&DH article too.
I agree - plausible.

Especially with a collar on that big and easily seen by all hunters.

I am not sure that many hunters would want to shoot a collared doe.
Some would question, is it legal?
Some would question, is it ethical?
Some would question, did they do testing on it therefore would the meat be tainted?
Some would question, what will I be getting myself into if I shoot this deer?
Will I have to notify anyone?
What questions will they ask of me?
Will this draw any attention to my honey-hole?

- maybe I am wrong.

I wouldn't shoot it if it was on my property.

If it stayed only on my property, it would live as long as God was willing.

If true (i'm not calling anyone a liar, but there are always crazy rumors out there) this is pretty amazing. I wonder if she was still producing fawns after all these years?

could have been an old collar. manufactuers etch a date of sale into collars for warrenty purposes. Could be the date of sale rather than the date installed. If that is infact a Wildlife brand tracking collar, then it could very well still be used today. They make good collars. The only skepticism I have is how well the collar itsself help up after 17 years and there arent any wear marks on her neck, and if the collar stayed in the same place, it didnt choke her. I'm not discrediting the story. I dont discount anything this day in age, just some things to think about.
