Default scents and bucks...

for you guys that have used scents, and you big buck hunters,

whats your take on scents??

i bought some doe estrous scent that came from a deer farm in PA...supposed to be good quality stuff...

i bought a drag and some wicks and had to test it out yesterday...really just wanted to use a drag and see if it hung up or was a pain in the butt, and wanted to smell the stuff myself..compared to store bought stuff, i can smell the difference...doesnt have that nasty rotten spoiled smell...i really think if anything works, it has a better chance than commercial stuff that sits on a shelf for a year...

i know if they can smell my drag or wicks, that they can likely smell me...i practice a pretty good scent control habit...so im confident there....

just looking for something that may help my odds...i know its like anything else, wont work every time...but maybe the right buck will catch the drag or get a whiff of the wicks....i dont know...

can it HURT to try???

can it work for older bucks??

Here is my take. I use them, but very sparingly. As you stated, the fresh stuff you bought smells different. There is a reason for that. The store bought big brand stuff has been sitting in a bottle for who knows how long. Urine, turns to amonia with time. I don't know the exact length of time that it takes for it to break down, but it does. That's the reason why you'll hear stories of hunters taking a leak in a scrape they find. It doesn't bother the deer because eventually it all turns to amonia.

When I say I use it sparingly, I mean I use it only during the peak of the rut. I use a couple of scent wicks soaked sparinglyin my favorite scent. We all know about how accute awhitetail's sense of smell is. There is not need to use a lot ofscent. They'll smell it! I believe that is probably the reason most guys dont have a lot of success with it. They use WAY too much. I little bit goes a long way.

Right now, I have had the most success with James Valley Scents. Maybe its just me or my neck of the woods, but this stuff seems to work better than anything else I have tried. In particular, they have one called Lethal Weapon.

thanx muzzy man....mine is actually in a small squirt bottle...IMO that helps because im not dipping a wick and having it soaked and dripping...every 100yds or so i gave the drag a few squirts just to keep it fresh...usually did it on a crossing so if anything came across it it was a bit stronger there...

im definently a believer that the fresh stuff from the farm will be better than anything on a store shelf...

its from Paul Pollick...its called flaming seduction or flaming doe...actually extracted estrous to give it more of that scent...it definently smells alot different to even my nose than store bought stuff....

i'll probably wait another week before i bust it out again....

if nothing else, it may get me better shot opps than without it...exspecially if one comes pounding throuhg a few minutes behind a doe...he may catch wind of it and give it a second look without me ever having to make a noise and potentially alert him....

i guess i'll see how it works for me...really cant see it hurting anything...if used at the right time and the area isnt absolutely over saturated with the stuff, i dont see them being alarmed or bolting from it...
