Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Wow what a night, took me til this am to get all the footage up and even then, it's shortened to fit Photobucket's limitations/restrictions.
Where to start? I picked Ben up and we headed to my honey hole. Ben was up to video and I told him with the doe sightings we've been seeing in the honey hole, if a good doe presented itself for the camera I would go ahead and take a doe out of this herd. Previously to this night I didn't feel it was necessary as the sightings were usually down. The doe must be rebounding. After settling in, it was long until I noticed Ben perk his ears to the woods to his right, he quickly turned to me and said Bear! Bear! Seems the bear I video and you may have watched from Friday night decided to show himself again. Were he was was through some thick hickory leaves so I pulled the camera from the arm as I had a better opening then Ben did and this gave Ben a chance to video him with his camera. He hit an opening so I made kissy sounds to the bear and he stopped and sat down and looked for us. ENJOY THIS BEAR VIDEO: Click Me. After the bear moved off we settled back in again. I heard noise behind me and I turned and looked through the thick foliage and I saw a flicker so I quickly glassed the area....deer I told Ben then I saw an antler move, BUCK I said to Ben and he turned the camera as the buck moved out from directly under us by that time. I noticed immediately this deer has been shot and just Friday my cousin who hunts our adjacent farm told me he nicked a branch and hit a 6 point. I had no doubt it was this one alive and well. PREVIOUSLY HIT BUCK VIDEO: Click Me The buck moved off down the field and disappeared. He fed for quite a while out in front of us and didn't seem worse the wear from the shot. It wasn't long when I spotted a lone deer coming down the CRP field. I glassed it and was surprised to see a lone doe coming. No fawns in sight. We couldn't have choreographed it any better. I had my 82nd perched and ready and contemplated a 40 yard shot when she turned and come right in. DOE DOWN ON VIDEO: CLICK ME She's a big nanny with no milk so she hadn't had any fawns this year. Hard to say if she was barren but she was a fantastic doe to take down. I hope you enjoyed the video. Ben did an outstanding job. ![]() |

RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Great stuff, Rob.
No. 1 - Are you kidding me on that buck being alive? Man! I would've NEVER believed that if I'd shot him and seen my arrow hit there. Another thing....he looks EXACTLY like the 5 pointer I saw here, yesterday....minus the right brow tine. He's a touch bigger in body size.....but the racks are identical. ANY chance he isn't out of the woods, yet....due to infections? Internal injuries that haven't healed (or WON'T heal)? I'd love to hear from the Biology guys if he's gonna make it. If so....it's simply incredible. I was trying to think of a way to describe the buck I saw yesterday's rack. Now I don't have to.;) About the doe.... I take back what I said about everybody doing video and it becoming "old hat". That was a good one, guys.;) Kudos to you both. I get "rattled" a lot, here, Rob.;) Gotta love seeing what "just a doe" (kidding, of course) does to us. It's STILL bowhunting...and it's still an awesome rush. Again....congrats to the hunter and the videographer. Great work. |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)

RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Nice video and great shot!
|
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
awesome guys!! congrats!!! thats good stuff!!
im having a super hard time understanding how that buck is alive....1)it looks like it was dang near spined, if it wasnt...and 2) it was a gut shot? arent they supposed to die in 8-12hrs??? i know it wasnt center punched through the guts, but it looks deeper than a graze that wouldnt hit gut...thats AMAZING....im still tryin to understand it.....super cool you got him on video to show your cousin... good work guys!!! congrats! |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Great footage, guys! That wounded 6 isn't what I was expecting at all when I talked to Ben. That's amazing he's still walking fairly normal, let alone alive! Sorry if I blabbed the teaser when I heard. I was pumped for you guys.
|
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
I'm still interested to hear from any medical/biologist guys if that buck's out of th ewoods, yet with that injury.
Could he still die from that wound? |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Great stuff Rob ...all the way around!! Congrats on the doe and I'm with Jeff .....WOW on that buck ....
|
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Guys I firmly believe that arrow passed over the spin and under the skin exiting where it did. Most people forget how low the spine sits in the body and thusly why so many people believe in the mythical void.....
That appears to be nothing more than flesh wound. I have more video where I zoomed in on him and if you notice in that one, when he walks away he seems to have a straight line in his hair raised from entrance to exit, that would reinforce it's just under the skin for the most part. Thanks all for the kind words. Oh and arrows, they are 27" Super Slams 465 grains traveling 280fps....KE baby! LOL |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Nice work guys! It's weird seeing that spot without any food in it this year?
Great shot and good footage but give Ben just a small sack TAP for not getting down tighter on the deer before you shot. ;) Way to hang tight on the animl as it ran away though that camera arm must be very fluid. I've seen veteran production crews punt that one more times than not. Is that the first doe you've shot on that property?[:-] |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Rob:
You were there and I wasn't....but this anatomy chart....your video.....and "above the spine" don't jive in my eyes. I'm not taking a shot at ANYONE when I ask the question I asked, earlier. It just doesn't appear to possibly be above the spine, TO ME. I just watched the video, again....and that exit (I'm assuming) wound is 10"-1' down on the right side. I'm just not seeing that as a flesh wound. Again....NO intentions other than MY education. |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Great video Rob.
AndI agree with Rob,that buck has some messed up backstraps but otherwise should be fine. Entrance was above the spine and the arrow exited lower without entering the abdominal cavity. |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Nice shot, nice doe, nice video work.
Your rest sounded loud, to me. Must be the proximity to the mic. |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Nice videos! Good shot!
|
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
That is some cool footage. Was trying to figure out if that bear was looking at you waiting for lunch or if he was looking at you to eatfor lunch :D
Whats up with that buck??? His tail never moves and it stuck in the half up position. Usually when a deer moves it wags its tail before they move and that buck's tail never even twitched. I would say there is some sore of muscle damage. Who ever shot that deer should try and get out there and finish him off. Just my opinion is all. Great doe also, WTG. Thanks for the awsome video's!!!! ![]() |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
I agree with Rob, righ over the spine.
|
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Great work guys. Cool footage all the way around. Ben good job. Way to pull back and find the doe as she fled and then push back in on her to capture her dropping.
Rob, I love the reaction. That right there is what hunting is all about. Congrats to both of you. |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
ORIGINAL: Germ I agree with Rob, righ over the spine. The problem with the not getting inot the body cavity thing is the rounded contour of the body as it slopes from point of impact to the exit hole. If you draw a straight line between the 2 on the pic of the deer walking straight away , and assuming the arrow stayed straight since the blades didn't cut the skin it had to be maybe what 1/2" into the body to keep the blades from peeling the skin back? Hard to say what did or didn't get hit but if it was something vascular like the main artery along the spine or kidney even if it was a nick the deer would be dead after 3 or 4 days or whatever it was? Could it have nicked the intestine? I guess..............He certainly looks pretty chipper. No hunched over feel or lack of energy which would indicate him being sick in any way. Arrows can do funny things in the body at impact.......just ask Pat Reeves on that big Wisconsin monster he thought he smoked. You can rule out a couple compromised vital body parts just by the fact the deer is alive, no spinal cord damage, no major vessel damage, no kidney damage...........not sure about intestine though and the self healing properties if they were even hit. Just another example of how tough these animals are and how comparatively wimpy we really are. I wonder what broadhead he was using? |
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Very Nice...Congrats Rob...
|
RE: Doe Down on Video. (Videos and Pics)
Thanks for sharing, great vids!
The buck video really shows how tuff an animal deer are! A little sad though, but we are at the top of the food chain. |
