Never used one. I guess I got lucky with my release choice, because I have not ever had to replace a string or serving due to wear from the release in the 6 or so seasons I have hunted with a release. If I had a longer draw, or super shot bow, or shot competition, I would add a loop. As is, I do just fine without it. There are reasons to not use one for me, the main one being that a loop very well can come undone.

If I shot a caliper style release I would definately use one, however with my setup one is not required to save the serving (rope release). I started years ago with a rope release when a caliper was eating my serving (before they came up with the loop idea) and I am still using the rope release.

I use a loop and I prefer a loop. For many years I did not, but I like it. I have used rope releases in the past but not for hunting, I prefer a caliper style for hunting. I can see no real disadvantage for using a loop except it shortens the draw length of your bow by 1/2"-1" depending on your loop size (so you will loose some speed due to the shorter power stroke).

If you choose any number of "Loop specific" releases on the market right now with short heads and forward trigger designs you don't have to give up ANYTHING to keep the same anchor point you would have shooting a caliper off the string.
Believe it or not in some cases with a properly sized loop, and certain loop specific releases it is actually possible to INCREASE your draw length a bit depending upon what release you are switching from.

That old addage of having to shorten your draw length to compensate for the added loop length doesn't need to apply any more if you gear your release to the loop and not just try to adapt your old one to the new style.

I go against the crowd. I shoot strait off the string, but it is for a reason. My draw length is as short as it will go on my bow, and if I don't want anymore length added to my draw. No matter how small the length may be. If my draw length was any longer it would be uncomfortable.

After shooting off the string for many years, I don't think there's been a single advancement as huge as the sting loop since I've been shooting. (just my opinion)

I don't think I'll everset upa compound bow without one again.
