Default Stand placement "strategy"

I found out a long time ago......getting deer in range is only part of the equation. I've said it before.....when a lot of people tell me they "Decided not to shoot a deer".....I subconsciously add my own "at" behind their "shoot". You could build a Wal-Mart in between seeing a deer......and putting him on the ground.

One thing I look for in a stand site is......a large tree in close proximity to the one I'm in. I've got some perfect spots, like this. I took 3 deer from one of them, last fall.......2 in the same day. This spot has a large diameter tree about 8-10' in front of the tree I'm in. I use this tree to shield my draw and me (drawing when it's between the deer and me).

Anyone else look for these type setups? If not.....it's somehting to think about.

Any downfalls to this that you know of?

I always employ a similiar strategy, especially with my climber, I like to have a tree close behind the one I am in, cause often I hunt facing the tree I am in, I use the tree in front to help cover the draw, and try an tuck my climber into the tree limbs behind me 9 breaks up outline

solid strategy and definitely something keep in mind when look for stand trees, I also have ladders this year and put the first in a double pine, the trees are literally 6inches apart -

Yes, I always look for something for cover so I can get drawn without being detected. Be it another tree, branches of the tree I'm in or brush along a trail. I'd hate to see a deer , have it in range and never have an opportunity to get drawn.

So do I Bob.....but if you had a choice between an 8" phone pole type treeandthescenario I depict.....I think you'd see my point.

We have an abundance of climb-able trees in this part of the country. I take advantage of that.

I do the same. As im waiting I pick out every given scenerio and decide if a deer comes this way, when his head passes here, im drawing. But yes I do try and put my climber when I set up in a new spot where I have as much cover as possible or in a "Line" of trees off the given trail.

All my permanent stands are set up with plenty of cover and trees to guard draws already as you have. Good post GMMAT its a good thing to keep in mind when hunting or picking out a new spot.

Do you mean the 8" that you use for cover? I think I mentioned cover. You may have to explain your point a bit more for me.
