If i remember correctly i thought that deer was killed on some kind of preserve. Not positive though
Nope.

Though typically a trustworthy site.....I tend to believe the recent NAW article in this matter.

It's not claiming to be the world's heaviest (it would miss by almost ONE HUNDRED POUNDS). And......similar deer (recorded 380lbs) have been killed near there.

Jeff, perhaps it is a different deer that NAW is publishing. That snopes reference has been around for a few years and circulated the net numerous times. I seriously doubt a publication such as NAW would have missed that as much as it has been around.

Does anyone have the NAW article so that we can see what they are saying?
i have the NAW article about it

Is it the same deer as in the Snopes link?

I totally agree. NAW would not publish a story about a "fake" deer, and you can never trust what you read on the internet. Plus what the hell would snopes know about deer anyways.
It is their business to thoroughly research and either verify or debunk Internet rumors. A business so propserous the Discovery Channel started a show doing the same thing. You may have heard of it, it's call Mythbusters.

Oh, and by the way, Snopes is very good at what they do.

Im not saying that they arent good at what they do. But for me, i would rather trust what NAW would publish about a deer then what snopes would.

The NAW article clearly states that the deer was checked and verified by reservation game wardens using a "Mule deer Tape" to estimate live weight via girth. The whitetail tape was too small to even be used.
The deer was logged in by the game wardens as 412#.
It was stated that the deers hindquarter actually sat above the level of the truck bed it was that big.

I thought the pictures looked legit the first time I saw them and it seems they were. Too many armchair photoshop experts out there.

WHile I typically would agree.....I did go to the site (snopes) and read about the "experts" they cited as their sources. Seems you can believe people who have no first-hand knowedge of the deer in this situation.....or you can believe the guys at NAW.

Like I said......he's not claiming to have the world record.....in fact....he's (the hunter)not claiming ANY "notoriety", at all (quite the contrary). He only said he'd shot a big deer. The internet is where the "trouble" came into the equation. He's killed some giants in the past (score-wise) and damned near passed this one up.....because it didn't meet his expectations scoring-wise (I think it scored in the low 130s).

It's almost ON HUNDRED POUNDS lighter than the world record heaviest whitetail. So he wasn't going for this angle, at all.

It's just an awesome deer.....taken by an experienced big deer hunter.....with several (at least 3) witnesses.

Jeff, thanks for the update on the article. I wasn't trying to say Snopes was right or wrong, just that it is in most case a reliable source of information. From what you posted and what Matt said it sounds like the deer was never actually weighed. Is that correct? Also, where was the deer actually shot, because the stories going around had various locations?

Whatever the case is that is a cow of a deer.

I read that article as well. You can trust NAW with information. That buck was killed on reservation land, but that makes no difference. It was estimated at 412lbs.I have to be honest, when I first saw pics of that buck I was one of the one's saying it was photoshopped. I stand corrected. As GMMAT said, the world record whitetailis 500lbs+.

Deer was measured and estimated weight attained (same method used to determine the world record holding deer at 511#'s).

Deer was killed on a 120,000 Indian Reservation in NE Nebraska.
