Things I'd add to what others have saidare:
1)a haul-up rope/string
2) reflective trail markers if I'm going in/out in the dark
3) extra batteries for my flashlight, just in case

To preface this, I'm a planner at heart.
Oh.. and I hunt deep in thick woods.
My backpack
para cord
binos
range finder
knife
flashlight
back-up flashlight
protein bars
survival book
lighter
windproof matches
batteries
bleat call
bottle to pee in
first aid kit
gloves
mask
poncho
compass
radio
wind indicator
scent free bug spray
glock model 30 with ccw permit
hmmm.. I know I have more than that, but that is all I can think of right now.

I've used a backpack, but I've found if I take my butt pad off of my tat'r turkey vest then I have all seperate pockets to put things in for more convinience.
