It is surprising though how different parts of the country have different views on this subject. I guess it depends on how you were brought up and what you were told as a youngster.

I now call em fawns but have grown up hearing yearling as well as everyone around here usually calls em yearling....no spots up to 2.5yo is considered yearling around here[&:]. lol
No big deal either way, but I refer to them as fawns now.

As mentioned re livestock, a foal or calf is a yearling once the new calendar year has begun. This is true in most cases because the aim is to have them born early in the year (winter). However, if the birth happens to take place in, say, mid December, it would be hard to put a yearling tag on that one at the beginning of January.
Using the same reference as above, a deer does not need to be 1 1/2 years old to qualify as a yearling. The norm is about 7 months, since the majority (here, at least) are born in June.
So we also have moose occupying the same tracts as our whitetails and mule deer. Moose, of course, are born with no spots. If a calf moose and fawn whitetail are born on the same day, do they both become yearlings (according to some definitions) when the fawn loses its spots? Orjust how CAN you tell when a moose is a yearling?
