What is a "serious bowhunter"?
Is it someone who hunts with a bow exclusively?? Is someone who would rather bowhunt than gun hunt but still gun hunts?? Is someone who bowhunts 3-4 times a week?? Is someone who knows a fair amount about the tech side and the hunting side?? Do you ever get into a conversation with a guy who has all the stickers and Mathews Solocam hat, yet he can't even tell you what his arrow weighs or what BH he uses?? but he can tell you how fast his bow is..(just had that happen this week)

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I like to think i'm serious...I know one thing school teatcher's who live on HNI during school hours got to be serious!LOL:D
|
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I guess it's like that Brad Paisley song....lol
I suppose if you say you are....you are. It doesn't really matter if you know how much your arrow weighs......what the correct spine is for your setup;)........or how fast your bow is..... Some people are gonna tell you can't be a serious bowhunter unless you've killed "X" number of deer......of hunted "X" number of years.....ONLY bowhunt.....etc.., etc...etc... I am NOT a "serious bowhunter". I will be more and more casual about it as I do it longer. |
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I've always been serious about Bowhunting, but for a long time I didn't have a clue what I was doing. I have never hunted Big Game with a Gun. I don't think that makes me better or worse of a Hunter. It was just my choice.
I still learn something every year about the animals I chase. You get too Old to learn then you are just not paying attention. I Love Bowhunting. I think the best advice for young Bowhunters is to keep it fun and progress at a pace that makes it fun. Hunt for yourself! with your own goals and expectations, and never let anyone that talks down your accomplishments cause you to get discouraged. It's a personal sport, not a competetion. You are always winning if you are having Fun!;) Dan |

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I consider myself a "serious bowhunter" in the sense that I spend more time bowhunting than any of my other passions although I spend a lot of time on them as well.
I do not consider myself a "serious archer" however. I shoot enough to be proficient at targets out to 60 yards so that I can be proficient on animals in the 30 yard or closer range ( a little further when I am elk/mule deer hunting). I keep my equipment in shape and properly tuned, but I seldom change anything or ever shoot in 3D or any other competition nor do I have any desire to do so. But while I am not a serious "archer", I have no desire to hunt with anything except a bow, so I guess I am a serious bowhunter. |
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I think most anyone can be considered a serious bowhunter if they do all that they can to become the best bowhunter that they can be.
|
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
it isnt a "heres what you have to do to become a serious bowhunter" im a serious bowhunter on my own level and original from every other bowhunter out there, thats the way it is for every other "serious bowhunter" .......just my 2 cents |
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I consider my self a serious bowhunter...Have I shot a deer? No, not yet, but I have put a lot of time into hunting, scouting and observiong deer patterns. I think the amopnt of effort you put in determines how serious you are.

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
A serious bowhunter?
My definition something as follows; a guy who actively uses a bow to hunt wild game with, not someone who has a bow and has hunted with it before, can be someone who gun hunts, prefers to gun hunt, I think the fact is that it hinges around the aspect that he hunts with a bow routinely....whether it be for better odds, easier draws, warm seasons to hunt, be seasons/ruts, long seasons..... I love to gunhunt, but for most of the previous reasons I have become a serious bowhunter. Though the passion is growing on me as well. I wonder how many of us would have even tried bowhunting if it werent for laws/regs that limited what we could do with a gun....if gun season were year round who would have ever tried bowhunting? |

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
A serious hunter is the guy that is trying to figure out where to hang his stand while making love.:D
I would consider myself a passionate hunter. Something happens to me when I hit the woods. Focus, dedication, drive, energy. I truely believe I wasborn to hunt. I feel the most at home in the woods. |
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
very good replys! all of them !!

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I realized I was serious the last time I walked to my stand. I had to sit for 5 minutes to get my heart to slow down and my adrenaline to slow. I take every step to ensure my setup is as good as it gets, by scent, wind, como, and when I finally stalk the 1/2 mile to the stand Im so pumped up I have a mini stroke before I ever get my arrow nocked!!!!

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
Do you take your bowhunting seriously, or is it a fly by night game to you? If you take it seriously, you're a serious bowhunter.
We all have our own view of what we consider a "serious bowhunter." You know them when you see/talk to them. It doesn't take long, and you think to yourself, "Wow, that's a serious bowhunter right there." Why does there have to be parameters around everything? Why is there a need for categories? Is a "serious" bowhunter better than a "hobby" bowhunter? I thought the pecking order only existed in the wild....there's an apparent pecking order in the hunting world as well. It's commonly called.....Ego. I'm seriously not sure if there's enough bandwidth on this forum for some all of us and some of our egos......I'm gonna have to get a bigger monitor.....Or better yet......go find somewhere else to play. This crap in this forum is absolutely, positively, downright freaking juvenile at times..... I'm out. Later. |
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I think a serious bowhunter is anyone that has a burning passion for it. Someone who puts the time in and tries to do their best even if they fail, but always goes back and tries again.
|
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I have been called a "serious bowhunter" by people that know me. But I actually don't really like that term. The most important thing to me is to ENJOY the time that I spend outdoors while I am going after whitetails with my bow. Don't get me wrong...I want to shoot a big buck as much as anyone else but I just don't like the word "serious" to be used to describe me as a hunter. What is really the point of doingsomething if you are so serious about it that you aren't enjoying it?
I think of myself as a motivated and prepared hunter that really enjoys the outdoors whether or not I score on aniceanimal that particular season. |
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
I consider myself a "serious bowhunter"
I may not have a wealth of archery knowledge or be in tune with every moonphase, buck movement, rising thermal, in my area. But I do have a passion for bowhunting. I love it. And I love nothing more than sitting high in a stand with my bow hanging by my side. |
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
To me....A serious bowhunter is "one" that is confident in their equipment....loves everything about it...lives and breaths it......I don't think you need a million kills to be serious....I think its a frame of mind....and how you feel about hunting.....
I like to listen to people that: -Enjoy the entire experience -Have an open mind to archery regardless of the equipment -have enough sense to listen and learn from me too and not just about them...because I will surely listen to them. -appreciate a plump doe just like a big buck I think we're all missing out if we're only thinking about scouting and killing that big buck...its bigger than that...right down to a cold beverage with a hunting buddy...theres more to it...then calcium...I'm rambling....BYE.:) |

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
ORIGINAL: MeanV2 It's a personal sport, not a competetion. You are always winning if you are having Fun!;) Dan I look at it the same way Dan. Thats the most important thing. To me someone who is serious about bowhunting is less concerned with their own success in the sport, than contributing to the betterment and continuation of the sport itself... be that through volunteering with youth, ethical practices, conservation practices, hunter ed, etc etc. Caring about the resource and the preservation of our sport is where the "seriousness" really lies in my eyes. |

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
when you think of hunting big blacktails, whitetails, muleys or any big game and automatically think of a perfect shot placed by your bow,You are a true bowhunter
|
RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
To me a "Serious" bowhunter is one who puts enough effort into things more than that of a casual nature. You don't need to be technically inclined, you don't need to be overly successful, you certainly don't need to be exclusivelly bow.
You need to make yourself proficient within your comfort range, find time in your schedule to pursue your passion and go that extra edge beyond what an average guy does. |

RE: What is a "serious bowhunter"?
A serious bowhunter:
Has antlers hanging in his kitchen Thinks camo is church clothes. Thinks PETA stands for people eating tasty animals Quits his job because he can't get vacation during hunting season. Buys his wife a bow stand for Christmas His 4 seasons: pre rut, rut, post rut, off season Doesn't own a butt removal tool or a cough suppressor Women ask him : is that a grunt call in your pocket or are you happy to see me? Always has hunting gear floating around in his truck. Feel free to add to the list! |
