Believe it or not these types of heads are much sharper then any metal head. I've tried knapping a few times, but I'm not very good at it. Some people are extremely talented at it.

Tred Barta.....I believe made his own homeade wooden arrows....and perhaps his own bow.....many, well some guys will make their own bows, strings, arrows, not sure about shale broadheads etc...from stone....

I had a friend that used to make flint knives and also skinned deer with them, just to see how well they worked, they were very effective...I have cut my finger many times on the flint in my flintlock and also the shards that I use when I teach kids at school how to make fire with a flint and steel...

Last year the Museum of Natural History in Raleigh had the original John White paintings on display, they were fasinating...For those who don't know who John White was, his grand daughter was Virginia Dare, his daughter was one of the settlers of the "Lost Colony"...

He had several pictures of Indian warriers and their bows, one even showing them hunting with a deer hide, including the skull and antlers on their heads (kids don't try this in the woods)...He also pointed out that one side of their heads was shaved, while the other left long, even braided....

Now....Who knows why they would shave (actually pluck the hair) on one side of their head??? VaBowman, hold your answer as I'm sure you know, John Smith made the same observation...

That is some AWESOME craftsmanship!! Just beautiful. They are like fine pieces of jewelry, too nice to ever use.

We find some around here in Charleston in the ditches at the hunting clubs, we also find sharks teeth one guy found one of those giant sharks tooth Megligon or something like that it was awesome.

Hey guys...The only flint & sinew pic I have is up north at the cabin...Here is my uncle with our trad set ups we used heavily in the late 90's...and some kills....look closely at the character of the bows(Osage cured in a stream and set...and the heads....flint....sinew from deer tendons off of actual bow kills from the years before....and the turkey fletch barred...cut knocks wrapped in sinew around the base for streath....




this has a steel head.....




This 3 point was killed with Obsidian which is a naturally occurring glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock.




Here is my knotted knurly Osage bow that my uncle made....It is 70 pounds @ 28 inches...very fast...and harder on the joints as I get older...I killed 4 deer with this bow...2 with flint....both flint kills were lung shots that died beteen 30 & 60 yards of my stand...1 pass through...one not....15 yards is a preferred distance.....

My uncle sells these bows between 300-600 dollars depending on design, buck horned ends, snake skin, raw hide,or sinew backed for durability...just like the Indians Justin!

Cool pics mich. and congrats on the very primitive kills. Im not 100% sure but im thinking in some states its Illigal to hunt with flint heads, please correct me if im wrong, just thinking. I to am intriged with flint heads and the way the primitive people lived there lives. I HAD [:@]a hell of a collection of heads, blades, drills, hammer stones, screpers and so on ,that i lost ALL of in a house fire back in 2005 [:@]This one in the pic has an interesting story. When i was hunting turkeys with Heartland bowhunter, me and Hunsucker were walking through a pasture trying to get a position on some turkeys. We crossed a small stream where cattle use it, and has stopped on the other side to ready equipment. I was neeling down and started noticing ALOT of flint all around me. Well i know when im in gold so i started glancing around and not three feet from me was this beautiful gray and tan banded blade that was 3 1/2" long. I will probably incorporate it in the habitat base when i get my mount back. cools stuff guys

Nothing illegal in Michigan about flint.....Never heard of this....Kind of makes me a little hostil....and I'm a pretty mellow guy

I mean gosh...send one in the lungs and then email me and tell me if it should be illegal....when you make a hole in the side of an animals ribs the blood flows and you follow a blood trail and the animal is dead.....

If I had one wish I would wish for all of us to have one experience with flint heads....and this is coming from a guy that still choses a wheeled weapon as his weapon of choice...not because I think Flint is not capable...only because I am more confident and I have not had the time and dedication to develop the confidence I had 10 years ago...I owe it to the animal....

However...Bw's Hunting Adventure's 2008....will have a stick bow killl..
