Came real close about 4 times in Georgia. However, I bit faster than they did. They came to the gun fight with fangs.

With today's snake boots why not just go and buy a pair? I just bought a new pair a few months ago. they are the lightest boots (and very comfortable) that I've never owned. Today's snake boots aren't like the ones ten years ago when they were thick and weight 100lbs a piece.

I've twice been bitten by a cottonmouth. Backs of the knees both times.. one of the left, one on the right. Similar situations. Thank God for insurance because the first one took 9 vials of anti-veninin and the non-insurance rate is something around $800/unit. My leg looked like it had been well done on the grill.... black and twice size... I couldn't put my britches on. Second time... hardly swelled up at all... little bit sore. Snake boots would have done me zero good. If you are tromping around a whole lot, or working around brush/swamps then chaps are a good idea... if you are just hunting casually then the odds are pretty slim to none. Most poisonous snake bites in the US are alcohol related... (FWIW... mine were not).

I had a budy that was bitten by a rattle snake on a quail hunt last year. It got him even with chaps on (3'' below the crotch). Its about 2 hours into town from where we hunt. We juiced him with anti-venom and sent him to the hospital. He was in a lot of pain, but was alot better in about 2 days. if you are in DFW check out the justin boot outlet, they have Chipawahs for about half the price. WE always make sure no one kills Blueindigo snakes around the house, so that they will kill off the rattlers.
