Would you reach accross the fence....?

Here's another question for those who said they would take it........What if the owner was looking at you at say 50 yards away, close enough to tell that the antler is on his property, are you still picking it up? Why not? Is the fact that the owner is standing there make a difference? Should it?
If the property is posted then in essence the land owner is telling you not to go onto his property, this includes reaching onto and picking something up off of it. He doesn't have to stand there, he/she is telling you via posted sign.
How many of you would justyell at him "Hey old fart, I'm taking this antlerso you can just shove it because it's within my reach, so go back inside and eat a chicken pot pie![:@]"
I'm interested to find out who would still take the antler if the owner is watching.
This should be good.

[:'(] Thats a tough one. It might offend the property owner if I had the nerve to grab it in front of them. He/she may not care about the antler, and not say anything.
*** If anything I'd ask them if I could take it.

Only thing that changes is I only have to walk 50 yards to show the landowner instead of driving up to his house.
I see what you are saying, and yes, a LOT of people would walk right by if they were being watched.

Whoa! Calm down! I agree with you 100%. I just thought I'd be nitpicky like some people like to be.

My opinion doesn't change. I pick it up, take it to the landowner show it to him and explain, offer it up, and keep it if he doesnt want it. Helps build neighborly

I can see where you're coming from but if you were going to go to the owner anyway, why not show even more integrity and go to the door first?? Or call out to him (if he's standing 50yds away) Tell him you saw an antler and would like to pick it up if possible? Wouldn't that be the proper way to handle it??
See what I mean?

No I wouldn't and we have been in that situation a few times. I got permission first. In another situation we knew the guys whoshed huntedthe landand told them about the sheds hoping they would respect our spots in return. We found out this spring that not only would they grab a shed right across the line but will also walk the whole area. Just glad we hit it first. They was just a bit of snow left so we went back to double check it only to find their tracks coming in off another property bordering it.
We had found a shed to a buck that was very important to us in that area. I lost all respect for them. While grabbing a shed right across the line doesn't seem like much...it doesn't seem to stop there for some. We have all heard the excuses... it isn't their deer, isn'ttheir shed, just a shedand finders keepers. Some of the better ones are... it posted for hunting not looking for sheds.Posted land doesn't apply to snowmobiling/shed hunting. We are doing the farmer a favor.
Since we are throwing in different situations. I have my kids out with me when we shed hunt. As a parent it is my job to teach them right or wrong. How do I explain that it is ok to grab a shed just across the line but it isn't if it is 30 feet in or a100 feet in. There is no gray matter here. It is wrong. You want it... you do things right to try to get it. I want my kids to know right from wrong to help them in life. Confusing them with gray matter or is that greed and the excuses that goes with it... doesn't help them.
And no I am not the perfect dad nor on a high horse. I do sleep easy at night when it comes to " just a shed " across the line though.

Really? The thread isnt about taking something from someone elses property? No wonder you have a rough time figuring out what is and isnt trespassing/stealing. Third grade reading comprehension should fix that and after youre done reviewing that, look up integrity, decency, courtesy, honesty, respect and discipline....all things you could use a healthy dose of.

No, that's NOT what the thread was about. Read it again.

I know you wanted a straight YES or NO but...
Does a bear crap in the woods?
If a frog had wings, do you think he would bump his butt everytime he needed to go somewhere?
Is a frogs butt hole water tight?
Remember where I live, if it's not posted, signed and dated EVERY year it's not tresspassing.
I didn't see any signs??!!

For the record guys...this indeed is a tough one to call because you're not actually stepping foot on another's property. I think it would come down to state laws as to if reaching across a property line constitutes trespassing or not, so I'm giving slack here. I know I still wouldn't take it but that's just me. Also it needs to be found out if antler sheds become the property of the land owner once they drop. I know that you cannot pic up antler sheds here in Illinois if you are in a Forrest Preserve area (lots of folks do it and probably don't even know it's illegal) as once dropped, become part of the states Forest Preserve.
So there are some laws here that need to be looked into before judgment is passed. I've known lots of folks on this site from the years I've been posting and I'll single out early in as an example. I hold him in high esteem and believe him to be an ethical person. I don't look down on him (or anyone else for that matter) for his opinion. After all if it was cut and dry Buckmaster wouldn't have started this thread in the first place. He did because there ARE gray areas here to discuss. Just because I wouldn't do it doesn't mean it's wrong oreven illegal. My position is clear, I wouldn't reach over and pick up anything on someone else's property, Iprobably would go to the door and ask if I could go back and get that antler I saw. That's what I'd do.....right?...wrong? It's up to each and everyone of us to decide that.
