It's called a "gall." Not a fruit. I think it's some kind of growthcasing around a bug. Like a cocoon.
yup, If i remember right its from a type of wasp larva that the tree then grows around, and moves out of it.

Ive seen these myself. They seem to grow every year on some of the oaks on my farm. I think its a cusion around a growing acorn but I may be wrong, never opened one up myself.
