Walking with an arrow?

Alright mighty hunters, how many of you walk to your stands in the dark with an arrow in hand. I don't know about you guys and gals but I do. I have had everything from yotes, possums, raccoons even people walking up to me in the dark. See I watch to many scary movies and it just so happens the area I live in, well I'll just say there is a lot of weirdo's around. Even in the stand, if its getting dark out and there is deer in the field, I'm getting my Ass down out of that stand and getting to my truck.

edit: DO NOT skirt the profanity filter by using symbols, it's ass, not a$$. If it's allowed, so be it, if not we will delete threads.

Alright Magic I know you are like Ed Gein and Can all your deer meat and nothing scares you. But to me if I can't tell what is coming at me I'm going to freak out. One time a friend jumped out from behind a tree at a party and my reaction was to punch him in the face. Had no clue what I did but that was my reaction.

you just walk in without a flashlight or what. i do walk with an arrow in hand for the spider web thing, but i always take my small can of bear mace every trip in.

I generally keep in mind that I'm the meanest thing in the woods that I hunt and if there is something that makes me nervous... I kill it and move on.

No I keep them in my quiver. But usually have keep the sheath for my fixed blade knife open, so it easy to pull it out if needed especially when the wolves are a howling'.

I'm sure it depends on where you live but nothing here in the dark that isn't there in the light.

Why carry an arrow in your hand? If you are that Spooked get a Machete;)

RE: Walking with an arrow?

I was out one night a mile away from my cabin and it was dark. The kind of dark where you hold out your hand and you can't see it. Then I discovered my flashlight was missing. I eventually made my way out using the light from my gps monitor. There are black bears and wolves where I hunt. I never once was scared. The only thought that crossed my mind was that I was going to have to sleep in the woods when my warm bed was only a mile away!

RE: Walking with an arrow?

Im not going to lie but there is a game farm two miles down the road that have tigers and when the wind is coming out of the north east you can here them plain as day. Its not a well kept game farm, in fact they have a slow camel there that they call Forest Hump. He gets out all the time because he knocks the fence down reaching for grass. They have had a hippo get out and a trout fisherman found itand said it tried attacking him, the DNR had to shoot that one. The game farm called us a different time and told us to keep an eye out for three monkeys that got out of their cage. They found the monkeys dead during the winter. So every time I walk in the woods I never know what I might run into. And yes I have a flashlight but its a streamlight and its not to bright.

I don't know what the end of the arrow has on it, but if it has anything....your just asking to stab yourself somehow...someway.

I have idea! Just run really fast yelling the whole way to your stand. That for sure will work and you won't have to worry about coming up on anything that might "scare" you.

RE: Walking with an arrow?

I'm not trying to pick on you. When I was younger the dark bothered me. I even pulled an arrow last season when some wolves got too close for comfort. Some one said earlier something about being the meanest thing in the woods. Thats kind of how I look at it. If something wants a piece of me then bring it on! They might win but I'll do my best to make sure they don't forget me. They will probably find me someday laying dead with a wolves ear in my teeth.

LMAO!! I've done quite a bit of Bear hunting in Canada, and I always carried a sheath knife. I have walked over a mile out of the woods after dark, and I always said joking that a Bear may kill me but the Wife will get a Bear Rug to remember me by;)

I have been charged while on the ground. I never thought of pulling an arrow, but if that Bear had got close enough it would have been batter up with the Bow.

I figured it would make a pretty darn Good club.

I walk in without a light (I know my route) with arrows in the quiver until I'm in my stand. I use a stick to clear those spider webs. You probably have a better chance ofhitting the lottery than being hurt by a bear.;)

I simply do not worry about it. Please do not stick me, ok? Also, do not run to your vehicle just because it will be getting dark soon. You do not want to fall on your arrow, end up sticking yourself, and have to be carried out by one of those "weirdos", LOL! [8D]

I always carry a holly stake in case I encounter a vampire. You need silver bullets for werewolves of course, but they are only a threat during a full moon.

I walk in and out in the dark without the aid of a flashlight unless I am protecting myself from other hunters by flashing my light at them. If there are other hunters around I use a light, otherwise I just carry my bow with the arrows in the quiver. It does not occur to me that I would ever need to use an arrow.

No walking with arrows here. It's a good way to cut your strings and cables. Besides, I'd rather use my bow as a club! [:-]

Nothing in the woods I hunt scares me, except maybe for skunks. The last thing I want to do is stick one of them though. I've had coyotes howling close by, thought it was kinda cool. My arrows stay in the quiver. I hate the spider webs too, but I just kinda get used to taking them in the face now and again.

Biggest thing around anywhere I have hunted are black bears and wolves and if they aren't scared of me enough to run away, then I don't think my arrow is giong to do me much good.

Never really thought about it I guess. Great, now I am going to be all paranoid walking into my stand:D

have not worried about it until now because I have my 9 year old with me. I think I will be getting some bear mace. We only see maybe one or two a deer season and I have never seen one but I would like to be safe.

RE: Walking with an arrow?

The bear pepper spray probably makes as much sense as anything. Awhile back, I was walking back to the truck after trying to roost some turkeys. In the twilight, I saw what appeared to be a cow elk ahead on the trail. Got a little closer and discovered it was a tan colored black bear, quite curious about what exactly this was coming up the trail. He sniffed the air for a minute and ambled off. I did nock an arrow forthe moment, but put it back in the quiver so I didn't cut myself.

Shortly thereafter, I got a deal on a stainless .44 Mag and, after carrying it around briefly, got rid of it as being too heavy and generally frowned on by the game wardens. The Counter Assault is supposed to be just about as effective, at least in the short term.

Well said magicman:

I always travel into the woods in archery season without a light unless it is one of those very dark nights with no moon or heavy cloud cover then I use a red head lamp when necessary. I have kept all of my gear in the same backpack pockets for years, so I don't need a light and turn it off at the stand if I had to use one on the way in and I can put up my tree stand blind folded.

I have hunted in In Canada, MT and throughout Midwest, TX, MO, OK and the N/E. I carry a knife , but it is in my pack and my arrows are in my quiver where they are safe.

I have had bears, elk, moose walking nearby in the dark of morning or night and heard bobcats, and mountain lions in the distance. Also been in the middle of a coyotes on their evening hunt more than once and hunted where wolves have been taken..... that is just part of the hunt and adds to the excitement...things one will never forget.....Stop watching those scary movies those things/creatures are not in the woods. One is more likely to trip, fall cut oneself carrying a sharp object than being malled by a werewolf....

Maybe this comes from extensive coon hunting alone a kid or with a buddy my age or running a mile or so of traps after school alone since the seventh grade.

The creatures that concern me the most are skunks and porcupines, but either have put an attact on me yet...

I can't see and arrow in hand in the dark as much of a weapon against anything other than man......

If it is an animal “Bite their ear off.........”

RE: Walking with an arrow?

Is this thread for real? I think if I was scared to walk in the woods, I would just not hunt. If you are scared of the dark, just carry a good bright flashlight...the deer don'tcare.

There was a guy that was hunting a few miles from my house that fell on his arrow that he was carrying and died before he made it back to the road. Carrying an arrow in your hand while walking in the woods is putting you in far more danger than anything that might "get you".
