I looked at the pic again I see theexit hole in the neck I think I would have left her to. Not much left of her to salvage at least she didn't go to waste. I have never had anything like that happen to me yet.

I lost one this year that I shot at last light as I went to the truck to drop my gear and give her some time when I returned it was a blizzard and I couldn't see more than 10 yds when I returned the next morning to try and find her the yotes had eaten most of her. I never thought about saving the backstrap that is a pretty good idea though if it happened again I think I would take those and leave the rest.
You made the right call though let mother nature take care of the rest at least you know there will be good yote hunting there.

It looks really bad at first but I think I would have just taken the two front quarters, backstraps, and probably one hind one on the spot. Its pretty easy to peel back the hide and do that w/o even dressing the animal. First one side, then the other. All that meat is totally untouched. The stomach contents look vile but the mess is contained ie the deer didnt spent a whole night thrashing around. Dont blame you a whole lot for passing tho[:'(]. I would have gagged more than once doing it.

The butt 's a pretty soft area to tear into and if a coyote brings one down they will actually grab the hind quarters first so it makes a natural starting point for them.
