All day sits...how do you do it?

Quicks post pertaining to all-day sits got me thinking...I know MANY hunters do all-day stand sits, but I could never pull it off. I don't know what it is, I just KNOW there is no way I could sit in a stand from an hour before legal time to dark...I don't have the patience. Since many of you are able to do it, I assume I'm the minority here, so is it safe to say I must not "truly" enjoy hunting? I really enjoy being in the outdoors in general, and just taking in nature, so don't think I don't appreciate being out there, it's just that I can't do it (for whatever various reasons). I think this is why I've become so drawn to turkey hunting because it allows me to be very mobile, and vocal, interacting with the game, etc.

So, what's your thoughts on this?

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

A few things can keep me in the woods all day.
1. A very promising spot at the right time of year.
2. A comfortable stand, with the right gear.
3. A plan for the day. ie Sit in one stand until 10:45, then move to another stand a half mile away till 2:30 then back to an evening stand. If you done your homework, and it is early in the season, there is no reason why you can't reasonably pattern some deer and up your odds in certain locations.

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

How much you enjoy hunting isn't determined by whether you can sit all day or not. Some people just......can't.

There are a few things to help though. The absolute BIGGEST asset is.......confidence in your spot. If you don't have confidence, you will not be able to sit there all day.

Second, dress comfortably. If you're too hot or too cold, forget it. Won't happen.

Bring snacks and water. Keeping hydrated will help you be more focused. If you're dehydrated, you will get......loopy. Summer sausage, apples and nutty bars is just about the best lunch I've ever had. Protein, some sugar, and some carbs.....Energy and alertness.

And lastly.....You just gotta have a comfortable stand. I know ya'll like fixed stands, but I'm sorry.....they just don't cut it for all day sits. Smallish seats, no back rest.....I could never sit all day in one. A good, comfortable climber will aid in the ability to sit there.

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

It seems like I never have enough time to hunt so sitting all day just seems logical to me.....especially duriung the rut.

It feels good sometimes to enter at dark and spend the entire day on stand. I think if you tried it once, you would like it and it would not seem like so much of a chore................:)

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

Oh, don't get me wrong, I know all the preparations one should make in planning an all day sit, but it's the actual DOING it, that I can't accomplish. I have on stand that has produced my last three deer (same tree even), and I tried an all day sit one saturday, and wow...made to about 12, and had to get out and move...even though I did have confidence that the area could produce deer sightings throughout the day.

My hats off to you guys, though, wish I could do it.

Matt, one other thing, you need to do like the pros do, play handheld poker or yatzee...those things are like deer magnets.

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

You don't have to sit on a stand all day to truly love it. I love deer hunting, but I'm not going to sit on a stand from daylight til dark. Usually I'll sit from daylight to around 11:00, that is if I haven't killed one by then or if it's raining hard. I'll get back on the stand about 4:00 or 4:30. When the time changes, I'll get back on an hour earlier. There are days I will get back on stand earlier. It depends on the weather. Down here, it can be 90 plus degrees through October. It's aweful hard to sit on a stand for hours when it's that hot. It's also very humid, so you sweat profusely, and we all know that's not good when bowhunting.

Damn Quik, I almost forgot that deer season is better known to one of my hunting buddies as texting season. I mean we got guys at our cabin that make a 14 year old girl look small time.

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

I think quiks thread was moreabout "whole" day hunts as opposed tojust a morning hunt or an evening hunt, not so muchsitting the whole day. Anyway, I don'tbelieve there are as manydark to dark hunters as you may think. It isn't easy, that's for sure! It's a mental thing as far as I'm concerned.
I only do all dayer's during the rut because they move all day during the rutfor the most part. In Pa it's not too tough because I'm only doing it a day here and a day there. But, when I go to Alberta it's for 6 days straight, and can be rough because of weather.I mentally break up the days hunt intothree seperate hunts. A four hour morning, afternoon, and evening hunt. For example, at 10:00AM I'll tell myself I have 1 hour until the afternoon hunt starts, and so on. I also keep reminding myself where I'm hunting, and that my dream buck can come by at ANY given time! It's tough, but it works for me.:D

All Day sits are the Best kind.

1. Comfort (1st & foremost)
2. Confidence in your stand site
3. Don't focus on the time you will be leaving (dark) hunt each hour for what it is.
4. I sit all day during Prime time (rut) increases your chances for action.
5. Some times of the season is just not productive here.

The best bucks I saw last year was between 10am and 2pm, and I killed my Mule Deer a little before 2pm.

Knowing those facts will help me sit all day this year!;)

Oh good point. Texting season is open for sure. If you've got some buddies you can text with, it will really help. Look out buckeye, bols, Greg/MO, jmbuckhuntr..........Yer text is gonna light up come October....:D

Being able to "talk" while you're there really does help break up the boredom.

There is no doubt that texting gets me through all day sits, be it the turkey or deer woods.

TEmbry, Washington Hunter, Bols...and whoever would like to PM me their number will be "blowing up" with texts:D

Like others have said....comfortable stand, confidence in the stand, and food, don't forget the chaw (grizz wintergreen);)

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

All day sits can be tortureous. But as mentioned the above things can make them go by a little easier. The best thing that makes them go by is continual deer sightings.I pulled a couple last season in conditions that I question my sanity. No deer should be worth that amount of effort.

On a funny note texting on stand passes the time real well. And honestly a "Cheering" section on the other end, can convince you to stick it out when you aren't seeing anything.

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

I do a lot of all day sits now during that magic time from Halloween till archery closes, and also in rifle season because of how many deer get bumped by guys that get antsy. As a matter of fact, nearly half the encounters I have had with mature bucks occured between 11am and 3pm. When I intend to sit all day I will pack food, water, and make sure I am in the climber so I'm comfortable. I often snooze out there as well which can pass a lot of time. I know you can't kill a buck when your snoozing but you also can't kill one when your in the cabin either. [8D]

My current cell phone doesn't get reception at my camp or Dan's, but I will have a handheld device by this upcoming season, probably a Blackberry or an I-Phone. I'm actually switching carriers in the next few months specificallyto get reception at our hunting camps. Dan got a blackberry last year before season and after seeing that thing I've gotta have one. That way I'll be able to text and harass you guys on here when I'm bored on stand. ;)

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

Like two months ago I got a new cell, but I had to keep the other one charged up and in the glovebox of the truck, just so that I can read tales of last hunting season. There are some real classics on that phone. I think on of these years I am going to write a book of texts from the past hunting seasons.
One of my favorites was at 10:15am one Saturday from my one hunting buddy, it went something like this: "we ain't killing nothing in this downpour, lets go to the place that I scouted out some Miller lites to kill"

Haha, take the card if you want it, you can have it. If texting in hunting season is wrong, I don't wanna be right.[8D] The only problem is when you have a joker and you have to restraint a LOL.

For some reason the older I get the longer I can stay. I NEVER used to be able to sit all day. Last season I pulled a few all dayers. Maybe I'm just lazy and hate to climb down the tree, leave the woods and come back and hike in and climb up all over again. To me that's worse!

WKP Todd 05-09-2008 12:19 PM

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

Put yourself in a stand where you are confident that you could see a "shooter" (whatever that is) at any time. If I'm not seeing some movement every couple hours (at-least), I won't sit in that stand.

Down-wind of a known doe bedding area durring the rut is usually the best bet!

For those of you that still have man cards reading is an acceptable way to pass the time,Rouark,Hemingway or Capstick are all great authors and their writings as enjoyable as anything thats ever beenwritten.

A sunny October day in an oak tree with a great book is really hard to beat.

Grisham, Joesph Finder, James Grippando, and Lee Child....great authors as well. I do more reading in rifle season out of a permenant stand. But you are correct 20 feet up on a sunny day with a good book is hard to beat, unless you have the book under foot a bow in your hands drawn on an unsuspecting buck.:)

There not much better than reading a classic hunting book while passing time in a tree waiting for mister.

If I'm home by the fire place I'm not dressed in camo and I am holding something warm and soft & sharing a glass offine winein splendid company.

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

I sit all day on stand.....no walking around etc....early days of Oct are tougher than the later dates....or even by Nov, daylight really seems to wind down by then, so its an hour or two less by then. During the rut I try to stay on stand all day, and even some other dsays, really the first and last few hrs of a day aren't bad, its the 4-6hrs of midday....does get boring at times, less something comes around, wish I were more successful on those days, seems to be a waste when nothing produces, but oh well, gotta try.

I think this year i may breakup more days, less theyre in the rut, also plan to maybe hunt the rut, pre rut more, soless in early Oct more in late oct, so maybe less days, but hunting harder/smarter?

I'm one of those guys who can sit ALL day between a rock and a hard place. It's just me I guess, but if I have a bottle of water, a couple small pull-off-top cans of something to eat, I'm there for the duration. I dress for the weather, and usually have a pretty good location that deer are using which helps. I have been known to nod off a time or two, but I use a harness for just that concern. I can get plumb cozy on a small seat without much padding!
