RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

I think this year i may breakup more days, less theyre in the rut, also plan to maybe hunt the rut, pre rut more, soless in early Oct more in late oct, so maybe less days, but hunting harder/smarter?
Along these lines: I think that I get burnt out early and then by the time that the rut comes around it gets to be harder to stay out. I am planning on flipping that this year, by huntin smarter early and harder late. We shall see.

I don't have anyone to text who would want to hear about me sitting in a stand. I did text Ben the other day to tell him about my gobbler, but that was in my fiances apartment, not in the woods. I may give it another try this season who knows.

txt? heck with that, I surf the net on my phone.. check the weather, read an article, mutli tasking is second nature for us teachers.. ;)I dont do it if I am set up in a tight spot where deer could suprise me, like in a ground blind, but if I am up in a stand and can see for a good 50-60 yards.. np, during prime movement time.. its put away .. I am referring to those all day sits when a guy can get a little bored.

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

Now this is a postI can relate to. I've been sitting in a stand all day for years and have developed a system as follows: Please understand first that sitting for 12 to 14 hours in one spot and keeping your movement to an absolute minimum requires physical and mental conditioning. so let's begin:
1. Stand MUST be comfortable! So, make it comfortable...
2. Bring lunch ( no meat, no garlic- peanut butter and jelly recommended) and a book orhandheld video game...
3.Do not move until about 11:00 a.m. then stand and pee. Afterwards, play a game or read or sleep....
4. About 1:00 p.m. do lunch and drink some water...
5. About 2:00 p.m. stand up and pee over the downwind side of your stand and then remain standing...
6. Stand for 15 minutes in each position representing north, south, east and west which should take you to approx. 3:00 p.m.....
7. Read or play your game or sleepuntil 3:30- 4:00 p.m. at the latest....
8. Put everything away and hunt like a Leopard until dark...
The key to all day success is taking care of your body and your mind so your fresh when the moment of opportunity comes!!!!

Good stuff Geronimo, except the reading and game playing part. Why sit All DAY only to jeopardizeyour chance at a big buck because you were reading or playing games when you should have been watching for your chance at your dream buck? It is supposed to be hunting isn't it?To each his own. JMHO;)

Good point, but if you don't do it and take care of yourself (mentally) you'll not be able to endure the many hours!

Quicks post pertaining to all-day sits got me thinking...I know MANY hunters do all-day stand sits, but I could never pull it off. I don't know what it is, I just KNOW there is no way I could sit in a stand from an hour before legal time to dark...I don't have the patience. Since many of you are able to do it, I assume I'm the minority here, so is it safe to say I must not "truly" enjoy hunting? I really enjoy being in the outdoors in general, and just taking in nature, so don't think I don't appreciate being out there, it's just that I can't do it (for whatever various reasons). I think this is why I've become so drawn to turkey hunting because it allows me to be very mobile, and vocal, interacting with the game, etc.

So, what's your thoughts on this?
When I really get into the right frame of mind(usually during the midwest rut);)I can stay on stand all day for days on end.

Do a lot of hunters do this? In my 36 years of hunting experience, with 10 years as an outfitter........I would say that very few hunters have EVER stayed on stand all day long.

It is very easy to get bored, lose those high expectations, etc.

Like others have mentioned, texting makes time fly sometimes. It's helpful to have unlimited texts come deer season. Me and MOmighty might do more texting than hunting somedays.:D

Like I said, that was just my opinion. If you take care of your needs, comfystand, properclothing, food/water, occasional stretch/pee, and the most important of all, good attitude/belief in your stand location, you can pull it off!
When I first hunted in Alberta in '05, my guide said I was one of only a few guys that he ever hadactually hunt dark to dark. He told me"you're the kind of hunter that will get a buckup here". That in it's self gave me the confidence I needed. I killed my first Alberta buck the following year.
I've huntedall dayfor 6 straight days, three years in a row now. This year will be my fourth. My thinking is, that for the$5000 it costs to go there to hunt, I'm going to be in the woods every possible minute. I saw my biggest buck up there at almost exactly noon time! Ijust keep reminding myself where I'm hunting (Edmonton Bow Zone) and it keeps me on stand and ALERT. I may not be able to afford it next year, we'll see.:)

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

I have found all day sits to be a lot like long car drives. At some point I just kinda fall into a groove. then the time just passesby. I have done it a lot over the years. If you don't enjoy it then don't do it. Its not for everyone and having an enjoyable hunt should be your goal. I agree with others who say comfort is important. I also bring a lot of food. If you get hungry you will most likely give up.

I guess I'm different than most. I never eat on stand and hardly ever drink, but boy can I put away the food and tea after dark.

I have found what goes in must come out. I don't wanna go there while on stand so I Load up in the evening unload in the morning and I'm good to hunt all day;)

Dan got a blackberry last year before season and after seeing that thing I've gotta have one. That way I'll be able to text and harass you guys on here when I'm bored on stand. ;)
Dude you have no idea. I dont know how I'd make it through classes or boring times in the blind or on stand without Brickbreaker.....What's brickbreaker you ask? It is the badass game on blackberrys.[8D]In all seriousness, it is a spiced up version of pong, but my god can it get addictive. Bring extra batteries.....[8D]

I can tell from your post that you have had enough experience of sitting all day to know exactly how to make it work and be enjoyable at the same time.

4pj sandwiches ,3 snicker bars for back up , 2 gatorades ,1 bottle of water ,layered clothing a must, few phone calls , tp,and a bow hunting magazine and im good to go ,but honestly i could not do it if it was not for the extreme comfort of my ultimate viper ss and the cadilac seat or more like athrone as i call it

RE: All day sits...how do you do it?

I agree with lots of the information here.

Here are things that I think are important:

-You HAVE to be comfortable
-You HAVE to have confidence
-You HAVE to have the mindset you will do it

If you want to stand, stand. It is my opinion that anything you do in your tree is not near as bad as making noise and getting out of the stand and walking back. Sometimes, I hunt all day because I hate leaving, and walking through Mother Nature's "show". I never want anything to know that I am/was there.

I agree with everyone that thinks books and games are counterproductive. I do take a Yahtzee game, and play a game whenever I need to. When I am playing, I get paranoid that I am missing something around me and put it away. I am in the stand to hunt. I also do some of my best thinking a treestand, I am at peace in a tree. I live for this. :D
