If the fawns have spots, i wont shoot the doe, although i have been told that the fawns will still survive. If the fawns are completely brown, the mothers going down. Just last fall, i shot a doe with 2 fawns on one of the smaller properties that i hunt. I saw the same 2 fawns a bunch more times that season. One happens to be a button which hopefully he will be running around with his first rack this fall, we will see.

I hope you don't use the if it's brown it's down philosophy.
Well....I do....with a caveat.

If it's female and brown....it's down.

You have no idea of the herd dynamics of the area I hunt.....or you wouldn't have an issue with this (if you do).
No, I don't have an issue with any of this or any of you. Everyone is entitled to the way they hunt. As long as it's legal, I have no issues.

I would shoot the doe. Except if it still has spots. If not, fire away![8D]

Looks like guys hunt for different reasons...If you are hunting for meat, shoot what you want, if you are hunting to reduce the herd you should take all the anterless deer you can, if you are just hunting for antlers, have fun...

If you are planning to shoot a doe in your area this year, this may be the perfect one.
A. By November, the yearlings are able to take care of themselves.
B. If one of the yearlyings is a buck, which odds are it is, this may keep this buck in your area. Meaning the mother won't be around to drive him off to seek a new home range. If you want to let something walk it is him for the next 3 years.
I say if you are looking to kill a doe, this is the ideal situation.
Would you say that the yearlings seeing their mother get shot wouldn't cause them to move off the area? This is where I have always been curious, does a yearling that witnesses the death of another deer stay in the area or leave in fear of the area?
NO.In fact just the opposite is true the yearlings will hang around and most likly stay in the area.In fact if you are looking to fill your tag fast kill the adult doe and the yearing will come back looking for her for a least a day.I would'nt kill the yearling if it was a button buck, but I did kill a doe one morning with a yearling in toe, went back to that same stand for the evening hunt and the yearling hung around all afternoon, this has occured on two different occasions.

Not a problem . The yearlings can fend for themselves . Shoot the big doe !

I used this exact tactic one year while rifle hunting. I went out to fill some doe tags one time and a doe & 2 fawns come running up to me. I shot the doe first then waited for the fawns to stop running and check on their mama. Then I shot one of the fawns. I knew they wouldn't go far without their mom. By the way, I didn't feel bad about doing it eithor.
Do you have any feelings for the deer you kill. If you don't, you are a killer, not a hunter. I hope you don't use the if it's brown it's down philosophy.
My purpose that day was to put some meat in the freezer. I did it in the most practical way as the oppertunity was presented. I had 3 tags open. I shot each thru the lungs. I'm not sure what you think I did wrong. I do have a lot of respect for deer. I can't put them in my freezer unless I shoot them. Should I have shot the fawn first then tried to make a running shot on the doe? And for your info, That day I absolutely used the if it's brown it's down philosophy!!!!!
As long as it was not a young buck. he would have got a free pass. I will never apologize for killing a deer for meat. Buck, doe, or fawn. I forgot to add, I killed a doe fawn 200yds away from them that same evening. She, and the other 2 were yummy

Shoot the doe and if you're lucky you'll get a shot at the other 2 also. Most of the properties I hunt are over run with deer so just about everything is fair game. I say just about because I wont shoot buttons if I can help it(though mistakes do happen), and I personally wont shoot anything with spots just for the reason it's hard to tell the sex. I have no problem with guys who do though. Hunting is killing and as long as its done legally and ethicaly no one can say boo.
