I picked up a good video by Wayne Carlton called "they come to eat". Very good video, but he explained time and again to be ready, because they are doing just that...looking for something to eat!

If I set up on the ground I'll be packing my 300 Win Mag. If in a tree I'd like the option of a bow first, rifle second. Where I am hunting is very open terrain, so I feel pretty confident I'll see 'em before I even start calling. I'm just hoping calling will bring them in for a closer shot.

Here is some examples of the country I'm hunting in. Very open with few trees. First shot is of some elk I was watching last weekend. The other is a finger ridge with mountain onions in patches I was hoping to catch a bear out grazing on. Easier rifle hunt than bow hunt as you can tell, unless I can call one in to me. If I could bait (and I believe the vanilla scent idea would be considered bait), I would have had a bait site in a couple different draws
