RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I've wanted to a couple times when tresspassers have put them up on my grandparents' farm, but I have always just left a nice note instead;)
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I took a loc on down last year that someone had on my lease that did not belong there. Poaching big time on my property!!
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I found two yesterday when scouting my new hunting land. If I find out they're there without expressed permission.....I'll take them down and leave them a note.....but I won't take them.
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
No and there is an old lock on that the cable has actually grown into the tree (or vice versa) within sight of one of my ladder stands on a local farm. I KNOW no ones hunted it in many many years (more than 4 years, minimum). I could take it with no remorse...but I won't.
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
Define stealing.
I don't think that taking down a stand and keeping it if it is on your property is stealing. Now, going on public land, or trespassing and doing it is stealing. |
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
stealing- Taking of something that isnt yours via not on your property.

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I've had a couple of stands stolen, three trail cameras that were later located and stole back and shot at by a kid with a .22 telling me to get out of HIS stand even though it was on his neighbors property and put up by me. Nothing like showing up in the dark, climbing up 15 pegs only to find an empty tree!!!
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I have taken 2 stands that were put up on my family's farm. I tried putting the notes onthem, but it gets to the point where I could really care less. I don't feel bad at all.
That being said, I once talked to a police officer in PA who told me that technically a stand placed on public property for a period of time could be considered abandoned and free to take. I don't know how true this is. Maybe someone with knowledge could chime in. |

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
Nope but I did just cut one down a couple weeks ago for a friend whose property it was on and turned it over to them and they gave it to the co!!
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
If they are on my land its TRESSPASING and yes they come down! I leave no notes cause they are not to be there in the 1st place! However I would never just take a stand that I have no right to (public land , someone else land...) I had a kid come in last year and when I was walking to my stand at 5 in the morning he shined his light on me! I thought to myself damn this is weird im the only one hunting here so when I saw no deer I was pissed. I called the farmer and he said noone should be there. I told him I was taking the stand down and he agreed and said just keep it! Turns out I never saw the kid again. Some people have real balls. I do know he was dropped off. I watched him walk out and get picked up! I never saw the vehicle again either! So if I was on the "MOMENT OF TRUTH" the answer is yes!

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I have a small collection of old abandoned stands I have found on my properties. They sure look old. Some of them are homemade.
I found one last year that was not so old so I unhooked it and left it there. I think the owner came and got it :) |
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I've never taken one home but I have taken one down that was way over the line. I took it down and layed at the base of a tree with a poster sign on it. Had it been any farther off the line than it was, I would have acquired it.
If I find one on my own property, it will go home with me and replaced with a note to come see me. If they do, we'll have a talk, if they don't, I now have another stand. And I would hope that the 4 people who so far voted yes are under this assumption and not outright stealing. There is no place in bowhunting, this forum or my world for thieves. |
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
ORIGINAL: DropTine249 Yep....If you hang on or near the border of our property, we have been instructed to remove the stand, place a posted sign on the tree with a phone number for the hunter to call to reclaim his property. But I have never and will never take a stand off of property that is not mine with the intention of keeping it for myself. The gentleman that I caught trespassing last week, he and his friend had 4 stands hung on our land. 2 wooden that were built and 2 hang-ons. I cut one hang-on down in Dec and the other down last month along with removing the 2 wooden stands. We knew where this guy(s) were comming from and how, just not when. While posting the land, we placed his stands the the wood from the 2 built stands over their fence line with a friendly posted sign stating, DO NOT RETURN - You will be arrested. This is your first and final warning. When I caught him, I walked him over to the stands and showed him. I said, we dont want to steal or destroy your equipment, so we placed them here for you. We will let you slide this time, but the next time, you will be charged. Thats not stealing, thats stand removal and return. I did keep his chain and told him that he wasnt getting it back...He didnt object. |

Maybe someone with knowledge could chime in. As hunters, we know darn well when a stand has been "abondoned". We KNOW, that stands are hung and hunted rarely in some cases. So, using the wording of the "laws" in your favor, in this case, would be horrible ethics and show no integrity. If there are vines growing through a rusted stand, MAYBE you can consider that stand abondoned.......Aside form that, on public land...dont take stands. Who knows, maybe that guy only hunts a day or 2 out of the year... |

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
You gotta watch what you do on those property boundaries. My neighbor misjudged his boundary with mine and put his daughters stand about 5 feet on to my property, so mistakes can be made. I didn't make an issue of it and as a result, I now have permission to hunt his 140 acres that bounds my land on three sides.

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
My buddy found a stand burried in the woods one time, seat is broke, so I gave it a new home. I dont consider that stealing, ithad obviously been there for years.

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
Kinda funny - I think just about everyone on this site has had a treestand or a trailcamripped off at some point or another. But when we ask, nobody has ever stolen anything... Thousands of people reading these posts, year after year, and seemingly everyone has been victimized, but nobody is ever the perpetrator.
There must be a couple Badguys in every town who have garages filled to the brim with treestands and trail cameras - and the Badguysmust not post on Huntingnet. LOL All I'm saying is that for every crime, there is a victim and a perpetrator. And we seem to have an "inordinate" amount of victims, but no perpetrators... All I can say is that I'm honored to be in the company of such a morally upstanding group! LMAO The King doesn't believe the results of this poll for a second. He was born at night, but not last night. |
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
Dunno quick, if someone is so hard up that they have to steal a treestand then maybe they cant afford to own a computer either, and they likely don't have a job with computer access either.[:@]

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I posted a thread last year that stated the same thing, Fran (ironically.....right after I got my stand and feeder stolen, I think;)). I think it was titled something like......I'm ashamed of my fellow "hunters".
I said it then....and I'll say it again......my "fellow hunters" rarely miss an opportunity to let me down. (When I say "fellow hunters".....I'm talking about EVERY PERSON who goes into the woods with a weapon........NOT the HNI community) |
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I will also go on record as I (knock on wood) never had a stand or cam stolen from me either. And I leave 2 ladder stands out year round on a local farm. Both have my name and the farmers name engraved on plates on the stands.

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
This is the "MOMENT OF TRUTH" Im honest I voted yes! But in good reason they were where they did not belong!
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
Lanse, every treestand I've ever had yanked or damaged... It wasn't about money. Or somebody needing a new treestand.
It was fueled by envy and the desire to drive me out of a particular hunting area. People get awfully protective and territorial over whitetail hunting - and they're not above vandalizing a treestand or ripping off a trailcam to demonstrate their displeasure with your "invasion" into "their" hunting area. The King will flat out tell you. When he gets victimized, he strikes back. It usually doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who ripped you off and why they did it. These people are usually the bottom of the barrel, both from a socioeconomic and an intelligence standpoint. Seriously. I have no patiencewith these slimebags and their anticsanymore. |
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I think that the issue of theft is gonna come down to where you are and the class of people in your area. I've never had a stand (or anything else) stolen off of my land or land that i have hunted elsewhere in Illinois.
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I had my Summit open shot stolen last year on my land. I also had 3 lock ons stolen 3 years ago by my neighbor who is anti hunting. Thats another discussion and itself!
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
I can only speak for my area, but when i think of the folks who i grew up around who might be capable of stealing a treestand from private property, I can't think of too many of them who would be regulars on a place like HNI. But then again, considering the temporary insanity that many folks tend to exhibit during deer season, I do think that self-reported deer stand thieves might be a bit under-reported among members here.
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
IF YOU TAKE THEM DOWN AND LEAVE A NOTE ON HOW TO GET THEM BACK YOU CAN GET THERE INFO IN CASE THEY GET ON YOUR LAND AGAIN.
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
There is a difference between stealing and taking down someone's stand on YOUR property. I can't believe that people on here would actually steal a stand, though.
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
Never taken one. Found an older climber on some property I hunt. I was the only one with permission and I knew who put it there. Had caught him tresspassing before.
He left the climber on the tree at the base. I took all of the pins so it woudn't work. Next day it was gone and have never seen him since. |
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
Nope. But if I saw a treestand on my property, I wouldn't hesitate to take it, or at least attempt to catch the person who is tresspassing 1st.
|
RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
Nope. Never stolen a stand. I've taken stands down that shouldn't be there and left a note, but not taken them. I have friends that have taken them and justified it as some here have saying that it's not stealing since it shouldn't have been there, but to me that's still stealing. I just wouldn't feel right taking the stand.

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
No, I buy all mine.

What a doubting Thomas you are. The next thing, you will be insinuating that some HNI members may have cheated on their wives or tax returns [:o]

RE: have you ever stolen a treestand?
nope, never stolen one BUT during a hunting season i sat in someone elses treestand. it was on public land and i didn't see his truck there...
