Who have you learned some real stuff from??

On this site? I learned a lot of little things from guys like Schultzy, Shed, GregH, Greg/Mo, Paul, Rob/PA, Germ, to name a few.. oh yeh, mobow, wvsportsman, meanv2, and Michgan whitetail!

REAL stuff?

A lot of what I read (sometimes here and often times, elsewhere) is regurgitated folklore and cookie cutter absolutes. What I get from here, mostly,is that odd tidbit every now and then that I can apply to my hunting situation(s). Those are the diamonds in the rough.....and they come mostly from very unsuspecting sources.

I've probably learned something from MOST people in here. I know there are those I can call any time and get their take on things. RJ and Rob/PA have ALWAYS been great sounding boards.

RE: Who have you learned some real stuff from??

I've picked Matt / Pa's brain so much there's probably not much left... :)I'm thankful we've become such good friends over the years so that I haven't received a bill for all the info I've gleaned from him... ;)He'sbecoming especially more important as a "mentor" to me as I ramp up my 3d efforts. Nothing like talking every day with a past Maryland IBO and ASA State Champion, Pennsylvania IBO State Champion and someone who finished in the top three at a Worlds shoot!! :DI respect that because I played tennis at an extemelyhigh level during my youth, and know it's one thing to win locally; it's all together another ballgame to win when the pressure's on and hundreds of eyeballs are watching you! ;)

Following Matt, there's a long list... Rob / Pabowyer, Antler Eater, Shed33, buckeye, Paul Mohr, Arthur P, Double Creek (formerly known as Belle Island), TFOX... aw heck, why do I even try to start?? There's tons others as well. I'd give myself a headache trying to remember them all.

Some dude from Chester taught me a fair amount about power bass fishing..... if that counts?!?!?!

PA Bowhunter cost me a few hours worth of labor just last evening with a few simple traditional shooting tips... what was 7 working arrows is now 3 working arrows and 4 with jacked up fletchings, fortunately I didn't robin hood one... but his tips were extremely useful and have me shooting much better already.

My first year here Davidmil taught me I don't need to cut shooting lanes a mile wide. He placed an emphasis on being low impact. That is one of many, many things I've learned here. When I found this sight I was a total newbie to bowhunting. I learned most of what I didn't learn from experience here. And I'm still trying to learn.

I learned that nearly everyone has something to teach and something to learn.

Knowing when to listen is more important than knowing when to talk.

I tip my hat to all you guys that are pros at bow setup and tuning. I learn something new every day. You guys are experts at all the available equipment. My locals know only what they have on their shelves and want to sell you that.
I would love to spend a day with some of you guys on the range tuning my bow and giving me shooting tips. I know I would be a better hunter.
There are a few guys here that I would love to spend a week in the woods with. Some real trophy deer killers who would bring my game up a notch. I'm not going to name any names so if you are one of these guys I tip my hat to you as well.

greg/mo wrotesome stuff in the techinal forum that were explained well enough that I gained the confidence to set up and tune my own bow, not a big accomplishment to some but to me it was. Now I tinker all the time.

RE: Who have you learned some real stuff from??

i say that without this site, i might not be the hunter that i am....it REALLY did help me a ton with the learning curves.

first i learned about buying, operating, using, cleaning etc a flintlock rifle. some of them guys on the blackpowder forum REALLY know their stuff!

and i also owe my bowhunting to this site. i was able to make smart buying decisions, learn the ropes, how to shoot, setup, tune, etc etc from this site. i got into bowhunting and archery pretty much on my own...noone really able to help...but the guys on this site definently did...had me outshooting my buddy within a couple weeks and he been into archery alot longer than i have...

also bowhunting and deer hunting in general...i am/was a big time rifle hunter. usually drivers or if i was on stand it was in a thicket or funnel relying on the pressure of other hunters to send deer through my escape route i was watching or into the thicket i was on the edge of. scent control didnt matter...tried hunting the wind most of the time...but by the time they realized i was there, it was all too late for them. never hunted from a treestand till i started bowhunting...didnt know a whole lot about DEER hunting honestly...hunting deer in rifle season in PA is A TON different from hunting them in october when they are on a much more natural movement...

ive learned a ton....heck, the guys in the offseason diagnose my truck problems and are almost always right!

just a great place with some really great people that are very helpful

RE: Who have you learned some real stuff from??

VA.....Like magicman....the tuning aspects of the bow have always intimidated me. I've learned absolutely everythig I know from the usual techno experts in here. I've burned the airwaves with questions to the MAtts, Rob, Greg/MO, Mobo, Buckeye,etc.....and they've all been very nice and helpful. I know I left someone out....but it wasn't intentional.

The longbow will be a whole new learning cur......no wait.....learning experience.;)

RE: Who have you learned some real stuff from??

There's allot of good folks on here. It's really not stuff that I've learned, its stuff that I want to try and see if it works for myself being it has worked very well for that one individual. Allot of the stuff I read on here I can't believe I wasn't trying myself. Its amazing how blind I am at times, you can bet your arse I'll be taking the knowledge from the likes of you all and try and put it in use for myself. The knowledge I've learned on here ranges from deer hunting ideas (hunting buck's and doe's) to learning and remembering to have fun, sometimes we all need to be reminded that we are out in the woods to have fun! Guys like Vabowman and BowHuntingFool have been a real plus for me. Both of these guy's would take the shirt off there backs to give a guy a hand, both of these guys I know I could count on if needed be. Don't be fooled by these guys, they have done very well hunting these whitetails, they have my respect!! Guys like Shed, Peakrut, Sliverflicker, DukeMicheals, TeeJay, _Dan, Oakcreek, Kodiak, Bloodcreek, GregH, BobCo19-65, Burnie, and others I can't think of at the moment have had some great success with there ways of hunting and I can't wait to try some of there ways. I really enjoy reading post's from a few others as well, here is a few that I enjoy TJF, Germ, Buckeye, Kyle, Magicman, LT, MichiganWhitetails, PreacherTony, xxxroryxxx, SouthDakotahunter, MNpurple, Double Creek, Rybo, Cougar Mag, jackflap allot of these guys have some things in common with me on the way I hunt so I really enjoy what they have to say and its surprising how some of us do allot of the same things. The Tech side of archery equipment is where I lack terribly and I need to improve so much on. There are some awesome folks on here! I can't believe the knowledge some of you guys have, I would give my left nut to know a 1/4 what some of you guys know. The guy that comes to mind right away is Rob/PA Bowyer, man that guy knows his stuff!! I wish he lived closer to me so I could rack his brain on this stuff!! Others that come to mind also are Mobo, Matt/PA, Buckeye (Again), ArthurP, BobCo19-65 (Again), LBR, Bigcountry, MeanV, Rick James, Burnie (Again). Thanks so much you guys for all the info you have shared on here! I apologize to the people I forgot as well, there's more of you but my head isn't thinking right this morning, too much other BS on the brain right now!!

Like shultzy said, there are many on here that are great, in fact all of you guys are good for what we do, so far anyway that i can tell. I think Schultzy and I were seperated at birth sometimes, that dude gets it done hands down!! I think magicman is probably the greatest addition to this site since Ive been on here this year. That guy flat out puts big deer on the ground!! Look at his trophy pag for God's sake!! He is humble and respectful, magic, you sure you're not from below the Mason Dixon line?? J/k northern boys!!!!!!! Oh yeh, my new boyfriend is swampcollie, he is a great archer from what I can tell so far and Im looking forward to shooting with him so i can pick his brain!!

Sorry hardwoods! Too many PAs, MOs, IAs, and even a few SOBs to keep sorted out! I really do appreciate the time you took... simple tips made a huge difference. A lot of what I wasn't doing was keeping my head tilted/canted at the same angle as the bow... I was shooting left a fair amount.... I'm still working on just taking my time... sometimes I;ll drill three great, then whiff one terrible....

One guy who is a wealth of archery knowledge - and he never gets any props for it (because he's always screwing around) is none other than our own Gary Hemry. The sultan of spoon.

And while we're talking about ppl who know what they're doing in regards to technical stuff- and never get any credit: Honorable mention goes to Swampcollie, Matt/TN and WashingtonHunter.

Helloooooo!! Atlasman of course. All joking aside he's a smart guy and made for some interesting reads, I'm not sure he'd win too many popularity contest(and I'm sure he don't care) but a lot of those threads were good to read. Lots of great individuals and many have already been named and there are many more under the radar butanother way this site has helped me doesn't have to do with individualsbut moreso the site as a whole(mainly bowhunting forum). There are a lot of dedicated guys and loads of different perspectives. I can have a rough week in the woods and log in and read somebody else is tooand that kind of helps me(comforts my damaged ego:D)or see someone had success and read thier great story and that motivates me. Seems likea lot of bickering and arguing sometimes(comes in spurts, and at certain times of the year) but about what I'd expect from any group of spirited men(mostly men anyway, no offense ladies and small children;)) and the positives of the site and forumscertainly outweigh the negatives.

Like Jeff said I have picked up little things here and there from guys that have been a great help. I've also picked up some little things that I've tried and thought, "What an idiot!" but that is rare.

There are some very prominent guys on here that get a lot of credit all the time and it is very well deserved, but this community holds a ton of guys that are more in the background and don't get anywhere near the credit they deserve. Quik mentioned Germ as one that comes to mind right away, Quik would be another, along with Rybo. BigJ is another. These guys hunt highly pressured land and get it done year in and year out. While the inches of bone may not be there, I know from experience that doing what they do is a grind and very difficult. Kudos to all those that have helped and a sincere THANKS.
