Not letting a deer live for more than 1 1/2... then there is something wrong with you.
BS - nothing more.[:'(]
How is that BS? It is And yes in Harsh winters Fawns and Bucks are the first to die but not all of them do. And thats in Harsh winters when food sources are sparce. Call it what you want if you take a Fawn you are selfish plain and simple the more you defend the more it doesnt make sense.

I would not normally take a doe fawn. That being said, I hunt one area (a by special invitation only program) and the Town in question wants us totake anything wesee.

Any of you that have ever played sports competitively might get this. Winning a game
by fifty points sucks, Knocking your opponent out with one punch is not fighting.

Its knocking the guy down in the tenth, its that base hit in the bottom of the ninth, those are the ones worth remembering.

And the same is true to me when hunting. It is not measured by the emotionless elimination of an unsuspecting infant.[]

I think it was Patton who said.....(and I'll paraphrase)...The object of war is not to die for your country. The object of war is to make the other guy die for his.

I'll take the one punch knock out.

Jim.....You've never faced the situation I face here. That little doe will require the same amount of food to sustain as an older doe will throughout the winter, and there's only so much to go around. If I only had 2, 3, 4 tags??? Sure. I'd take the older gals. I have unlimited tags for does....and I've been advised to take ANY female deer.

Any moral dilemma I face is mitigated by the overpopulation issue.

I've said it before.....and I'll say it again. Hunting is VERY personal. My preference would be to hunt for A doe and A buck every season. I might get to a point where I do that, even here. But in making that choice.....I see that as being VERY selfish. The overall good of the many....vs. the demise of a few......is the ideology umbrella I'm working under.

That is a very good analogy, but to me hunting also has a lot to do with bringing home meat. I don't buy red meat at all. I supply all the red meat we eat every year. If I did not do well enough to stalk the freezers by the beginning of whitetailseason, then I will shoot the first doe, be it a fawn, yearling, or adult, that comes by. Fawns are smaller, but they sure as heck taste the best. The rump roast isbetter than thetenderloin off of an old deer. I'm not arguing your point at all, just trying to explain mine. I don't hunt just for an adrenaline rush.

Jeff all that I can say is that I'm glad that I don't have your situation because I know that you struggle with what needs to be done and what your heart tells you. I personally have no problem shooting a yearling, I know that some people do. But what kills me is all of this "unsuspecting infant" and "baby killer" crap. Any deer that you kill is unsuspecting if they suspect that you are there to kill them they don't stay around, albeit a yearling or a mature buck. JeffI think that you need to settle this in your heart that if you want to honestly thin you her then make peace with it and go out there and do what you need to do. JMO

I have played plenty of sports and while I "get" what you are saying I think it isa touch oversimplified for myself anyway. I kill plenty of deer and won't hesitate on a young doe and while it may not be the same level of excitment as looking through my peep at a nice buck the experiences are far more than "emotionless eliminations". I still feel plenty of emotions on any kill and Ienjoy every second I get in the deer woods and I geteven moreenjoyment/ satisfaction from any successful hunt. Ican understandhow itcould get old to someand I pass a lot ofdeer asI get a littlemore fadein my camo simply because processing deer can become like work when you kill 10-15 a season, but evenduring those seasons the emotion wasalways there regardless of the specs. on the deerand I'm thankful for that.

I too would prefer a one punch knockout to a ten round battle personally, I'm not sure which I prefer watching though as they both have their good points.
