I have seen them jump six feet or more (over a barbwire topped fence) at the depot. That is when they could have entered throughthe gate (a hundred yards away). Often, they enter and exit through the gate, though.

Deer are lazy animals and if it's unnecessary, they won't do it. Even 3' fences, they'll pick the low spot or downed spot creating funnels.
If you want the ultimate hunting spot, run a fence across the property but leave an opening and hang a stand...LOL [8D]

While working my Uncles Apple Orchard in Wisconsin, I saw deer jump his 10' fence.
They will also burrow under the fence like a dog.

In the article cited......the deer that were pushed out jumped back IN to the fenced area when the fence was restored. The author notes watching them clear the hurdle.......@ 9.5'.

A white tailed deer standing on his hind legs is about5-6 feet tall at his front leg "arm pits" and that is before his hind feet ever leave the ground.
I have read a few articles that state that a white tailed deer can, although rare, clear a 12 foot fence if they have to.

We (co-workers & I) herded a mule deer buck into a 8 ft fenced area to keep him from running into a busy street. Called the local fish and game to let them take care of the buck. While waiting we heard a commotion and turned to see the buck tettering on the top of the fence, then flop over to the other side. He then headed down the railroad tracks behind the fence and appeared unscathed...
