RE: What are ya'll's Backgrounds?
Well...My upbringing was "slightly" different than most here.:D:D
Igrew up on the south side of Chicago, went to a public school in Chicago Heights that had almost 1,000 kids......in the graduating class! I survived bitter race wars and can remember mass brawls in our school when I first arrived as a freshman (1979). They subsided by 1981 but it for sure wasn't the most friendly school to go to. I hung out where most kids did in and around big cities....I stayed out of trouble for the most part but I had my share of run-ins. That's life in the big city as they say.;) My father was a camp director for a boys school and I spent all of my summers from the time I was 6 months old till I was 17in the far...far north woods of Wisconsin (Sawyer Co.) I camped and fished along the East fork of theChippewa River. I learned most all of my outdoor skills in those woods.I hunted them for years (and still do) took my first bear up their. My dad was an outdoorsman and showed me (and my brothers)how to live off the land, how to hunt, how to canoe, sail, shoot, and archery. I received a full football scholarship to BYU in the fall of 1983. Their I spent the better part of 5 years hunting in the Wasatch mountains on the western edge of the Rockies. I continued to hunt while in school. Even though I was born in the city and grew up their I spent a lot of my time in the country, It's more comfortable and peaceful to me and will always be my core. I must say though, having been raised in both "environments" has made me more.......well lets just say"cultured".;) |

RE: What are ya'll's Backgrounds?
1968 Impala with a built up 327,we were doing about 135 when we rolled,we hit the ditch backwards and there was a trench dug out for water flow when we hit the trench my left side face hit the corner post at basiclly a dead stop then the car flipped 3 1/2 times and I was thrown out the windshield while the car was starting the 1st of the flips......my GF at the time was driving and had a few beers in her,I didnt drink at the time(burnout/jock),I remember watching from a high place then crawling onto the road seeing headlights from another carthen wakeing up in fargo nd meritcare hospital,120 miles from home......this is just a quick rundown.....

RE: What are ya'll's Backgrounds?
Wow, some pretty interesting life histories here. And the vast majorityhave rural upbringings with very few city slickers thrown in.
I'm one of the exceptions. I grew up in a big city and didn't escape until I was about 24. It was relatively mild in those days and at one time I even delivered newspapers for a large daily that had to be done starting at 4:30 in the morning. I think now you'd get mugged half a dozen times a round. By good fortune, I chose a profession that got me out of there - the mining industry. Also by a bit of a fluke and somewhat of a whim, my wife and I bought a farm in 1974. I was a terrible farmer to start with but we had great neighbors who helped us get smarter, and only laughed when we weren't nearby. We put up a bunch of hay every year, always had a few cows (both beef and dairy), and raised and showed Quarter horses. Sold the farm in 1995 and still have enough acres to run a 3D course throught the woods. So now I've lived rurally a good bit longer than I spent in the city, and glad of it. Once in a blue moon, I go back for whatever reason and the traffic about drives me nuts. Where we are, there's great whitetail, mule deer, elk, moose, and bear hunting, as well as a bunch of smaller game. Fishing is pretty good too. As for you ball players, the nearby town hosts a big invitational tournament every September. We've had the likes of Larry Walker and John Olerud play here before they became stars. |
RE: What are ya'll's Backgrounds?
OK 'nough said just glad everyone was ok. What color was the car? I'm a sucker for old cars.

RE: What are ya'll's Backgrounds?
I was abandoned as a baby and left out in the sticks. As luck would have it, I was placed in a ditch alongside a well used deer trail. I was found and taken in by an old doe that had lost her fawn. Yes, I was raised by deer. By the time I was 2 1/2, I was beside myself because I couldn't grow any horns (deer call 'em horns). Even though I could run faster, jump higher and hide better than the buds in my bachelor group, I couldn't fight. I was laughed at, made fun of and eventually ostracized by my peers. One night I slipped up and got caught in some old coiled up barbed wire near the edge of a field. I couldn't get free and was left to die. That's how deer are. After 3 days of struggling I gave up and laid down awaiting my demise. As luck would have it I was found by a gruff old hunter. I was near death and unconscious so it was an easy matter for him to cut me free and carry me back to his cabin. You know the rest, he raised me back to health, taught me how to speak and finally convinced me that I was human (that one took some time, I still have my doubts). Any way, after a few years he passed and I was on my own. Since I was 12 years old, old enough to get my hunting liscense, I have made it my mission to go out and exact my revenge on whitetail bucks. This has been going on for 40 years and I'm still not done. They should not have teased or made fun of me the way they did. ;)

RE: What are ya'll's Backgrounds?

RE: What are ya'll's Backgrounds?
Raised on a tobacco and cattle farm in VERY rural NC. Went to college on a baseball scholarship......graduating in 1987. Spent a couple years in the finance (auto) industry and also worlked for a businessman from my hometown....and moved around the South a little. Spent 5+ yrs as a PGA Professional......being inducted into membership of the PGA in 1994. Moved a couple more times after getting onto the construction industry.....and finally moved "home" (within 40 miles) in 2000.
Hunting background was born on small game and dove hunting for several years.....then waterfowl....when I was training my lab (obtained her MH). Also owned a nice in/offshorefishing boat that was well used. Had I not moved inland from the coast...I'd still be chasing kings on the water and waterfowl in the tidal creeks. Missed out on a lot of country things for several years.....but it put me in a position to be able to really enjoy the things I love, now.Bow hunting (deer and turkeys)has been a breath of fresh air.....and I'm glad I found it. |
RE: What are ya'll's Backgrounds?
I am a graduate of the school of hard knocks. Most of those knocks were self inflicted.
My hunting career started when I was a kid in Connecticut. Bird and small game hunting with my dad. We did a lot of fishing as well. I took a 25 year lay off from hunting until 3 1/2 years ago when I started shooting a bow and bowhunting. |
