What Have You Done?
#1
Me and a buddy were standing around the campfire on the river last night, just chewing the fat, and this topic came up. Just curious what others here have done/are doing. We got on the subject of our younger generation/our own kids and how they would survive if it just came right down to it. What have you done, or what are you doing with your children to ensure they could make it off the land if need be. I know, this is not exactly bow hunting related, but it could be in a round about way. Just curious to see what the replies are.

You know what LA---Im not all that savvy when it comes to be a survival man. My kids know how to fish, and both seem really interested in shooting my bow. But that is for them to decide. My wife teaches them about plants and vegetables, as we have a small garden. But for one thing, my kids are going to be mentally tough, I can tell you that. They are not going to be quitters, and I guess that would play in to being able to survive in the woods when times got hard and lean.

I have taken every step possible to make my son as wealthy as possible. I know that has nothing to do with living off the land but in this day and age the "land" is where you are and what you perceive to be the living you want. He will probably be able to survive.

I am really shocked at the lack of responses here. This is not meant to be a "don't tell me how to raise my kids" type thing. I am just curious as to what we do to ensure our children can survive if need be.

If need be I'd be in the mountains away from everyone else living off the land. My daughter is 8 months old and I'd put money on it by judging how active she is now and how much of a daddys girl she is it wouldn't take long to have her doing exactly what need be if it happened.

Could "you" trap an animal for food without anything but what grows in the woods? Could you teach your child to do it? Could you preserve meat to last for more than a couple days? Could you teach your child to do it? Can you start a fire without matches?
These are just some examples.

My son is VERY outdoor and animal wise! We have a wide range of things we do together in the outdoors. From planting gardens, foodplots, thousands of trees planted together, tranplanting of trees, tracking of animals, telling the difference in animal tracks. What a really like is teaching him his sense of direction(so to speak), he knows his way around woods and which direction in what! Fun stuff. He knows how to break down his guns and clean them and handle them properly, he is an amazing shot as well! Love to just shoot, his bow and all his guns. Not bad for a 12 year old! Let me tell ya the kid can catch a fish too!
