I read a lot about the rut and buck patterns and pre- rut, post rut, etc and I realize that I do none of these things these articles talk about. I simply hunt food sources all season. Pre-rut, rut, and post -rut. I have always seen/killed bucks this way, I never really paid much attention to travel routes, ditches, pinch points etc.. I just find food, see where deer are entering and where they are eating, and hunt the stand. Wind is either in my favor or it ain't, I don't have the luxury of not hunting that day or going to another farm like some of these guys talk about. I just drinch myself with earth scent and put some Deer Dander on and hope for the best. Most of the time it seems to work in my favor. Most guys get off on rubs and scrapes, I don't, I like to see droppings , fresh ones, wet ones, more than anything, if rubs and scrapes are there, great, if not, so what. Am I stupid or just plain crazy??!!

juuuust kiddinggg!I actually understand what you mean. I find myself just hunting over the food plots and later through the season i start to see less bucks. Then i move to the draws etc.

I think that if you concentrated on where the does will be, the bucks will follow. I think that their pattern changes w/different food source availability. I'm not sure if the weather changes as dramatically as here in Wi. But the food source is dictated by the weather. What you find in Oct/early Nov. will not be found in late Dec. Heavy snow, strong winds, etc. I think play a part of where the deer will go. I hunt trails, mainly the place between bedding areas & food areas. They can be predictible as to the area they cross, whether or not they want to come under your stand to play is just luck.

I have studied deer for over 40 years. When I hunt them I know exactly why and what kind of trail and tactic I'm going to use. I hunt food at certain times of the year and I hunt cover at certain times of the year. It all depends on what I'm after. In the grand scheme of things, in the most general sense, It's always about food and cover. A lot of times evenings = food and mornings = cover. BTW, where I hunt food is where ever the deer is standing. Everything is food to them. They just happen to prefer one over the other or the other over the one. That's for you to figure out![:-]

vabowman does it the old hillbilly way...hunt long hours with one sandwich in the pocket, a soda in the other, and a dip in the jaw!!
I look forward to getting in the woods this upcoming season with you VA.....best of luck with the end of your school year.

Thanks Brett, I look forward to having you down!! I know that funnels and ridges and all that stuff including wind, is a variant in the hunt, but, when Im scouting I look for food first and droppings that show they are there eating. I don't hunt fields and food plots, there none for me to hunt, I hunt overacorns. Most of my hunting is done in the Suburbs, the deer can only come certain ways to places. I will be hunting a lot larger farm this year and it will make me change some things. Schultz, you are right, I won't fix it, I will just reform it!!
