if you have ever hunted a awesome funnel it will become your favorite spot......food sources are great but they dont compare to a great funnel....unless its late season

I killed a 115" buck this year, I was hunting between 2 cutovers on a long strip od woods with a creek bottom, he walked right down the trail and stopped at 8 yds below. Would you consider this a funnel. He was on his way to an oak flat, obvious food source. I guess if you can find a funnel to a food source it's golden!!

I see your from Illinois, I can only imagine that Virginia hunting is a little different than Illinois hunting, seeing and reading all the articles and shows. Of course I can't speak for him, but in NH, the deer are not abundant which reduces the amount of sightings or opportunity to harvest a buck with any size. If you want a challenge try NH, Maine or Vermont. There is big deer up here, but the herds aren't as big and a lot of forest land. Needle in a haystack. I challenge you to try these tactics up here, you'll find that you have accumulated a lot of unfilled tags.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this way of hunting, although I think according to your description of the way you hunt, you are fairly new at hunting deer. Is this correct? If so, then IMO, as you mature as a deer hunter, after you have several deer under your belt, you may decide to only hunt a mature buck for instance which would make you try to understand more of the habits of a mature buck and concentrate on more of the lifestyle of a mature buck instead of just a food source.

I too hunt food sources all season round, I'm in the same boat as you. I never have time to go hunting with 4 sports but when i get the chance i always take it, so i hunt no matter what the conditions are.

When I hunt the open woods on the public land I hunt, I have to find the tightest cover, and the shortest travel routes for the deer most of the season. If I don't narrow their movements down to a 25 yard bow shot, most of the time I will not be getting any shots at all. Like this year, I saw a total of only 15 deer all year long in the woods(the least amount I have in 15 years)....but I had half of them in bow range, and killed three of them. For me, I have to utilize funnels, saddles, and setting up on the edges of bedding areas at certain times or I will be out of luck. So for me, it is more working the geography of the land as compared to hunting food sources.

Thanks Hunter 59--my buddy also bowhunts a tremendous amount and told me he saw the least amount of deer in the woods in his whole 30 year plus hunting career this year....and he hunts around the same places I do...weird.
